Multi-Grammy-winner Phil Collins is quitting his music career. The former Genesis drummer says he is planning to retire from his long and successful stint in showbiz after learning that he has health problems that prevents him from playing drums. The 60-year-old “In the Air Tonight” and “Against All Odds” hitmaker told FHM, via Time magazine, that years of hunching behind his drums left him with nerve damage in his stick-clutching hands, making playing the instrument painful. He also suffers from other medical conditions he got from years of performing, including hearing loss and dislocated vertebra. Collins, who now lives in a small town in Switzerland, thinks that retiring is the only logical thing to do next, saying, “I don’t really belong to that world and I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me. I’m much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely.” And to the haters who have been highly critical of his accomplishments in the industry since the late ’60s, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee apologized for being successful, saying, “I’m sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn’t mean it to happen like that.” “It’s hardly surprising that people grew to hate me.”
