Elton John and Leon Russell collaboration first listen. Songs from the upcoming Leon Russell and Elton John collaboration `The Union` have started hitting the web. Two tracks, ‘I Should Have Sent Roses’ and and the first single ‘If It Wasn’t For The Bad’ have been released online via the Elton John Corporation. ‘The Union’ was recorded live in the studio and covers multiple music genres like gospel, soul, country, pop and rock. It was produced by T-Bone Burnett. The album marks a unique collabo ation with the two musicians who met when Leon attended Elton’s show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in 1970. “In the late ’60s and early ’70s, the one piano player and vocalist who influenced me more than anybody else was Leon Russell,” Elton said in a statement. “He was my idol.” The pair toured together soon after but then lost touch for decades. “Elton called to ask if I would do a duet album with him,” Russell said. “I’m very happy that he chose me to do this.” The duelling piano players will perform together on November 3, 2010 at the Hollywood Palladium. ‘The Union’ album will be released on October 19.
Cool and the Gang, better known as Kool and the Gang, and their numerous hit songs including “Celebrate” and “Get Down on It,” have performed at places where they seemingly were loved unconditionally. No record store has ever sold their music, and no-one had ever seen them perform live, but the Cubans have taken them into their hearts for years. Cuban filmmaker Gloria Ronaldo said the bands sounds of funk, provided the soundtrack for her generations youth. And even though in the 60’s there was a communist government movement that outright banned American music and looked down upon it in the next decade, when it was rarely heard on government airwaves. Ronaldo recalls it being played everywhere. But Sunday at the Miami stadium for the Orange Bowl, the “gang” rocked the stadium with a performance that set the halftime crowd ablaze. One of the biggest and best bands of the 60’s and 70’s they literally performed like it was a concert. At the Land Shark Stadium, Florida the band including brothers Robert and Ronald Bell along with the rest of the “Gang” gifted the fans and the viewers to a performance not often seen these days. There are even reports of this halftime show being the best one ever! The guys gaining new fans while thrilling old one’s. Kool and the Gang have sold over 70 million albums worldwide, and are a American Jazz.R&B/ Soul/Funk and disco group, who originally formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964.
Pitbull has come a long way from battling MCs in the back alleys of Miami. After a decade in the music game, Pit is a bigger star than he’s ever been. His “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” is currently a top-20 single and “Hotel Room Service” is #10 in the country. Gibson Custom announced a guitar fit for every sharp dressed man, the Billy Gibbons Pearly Gates Limited Edition Les Paul Standard. And now you can own it. Billy Gibbons’ favorite axe has always been his beloved Pearly Gates – a rare 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard with legendary angelic qualities.
It has appeared on every track of every ZZ Top album to date, and sings with a ‘God-like voice’ unlike any other guitar. And now, the master craftsmen at Gibson Custom have recreated it in excruciating detail – right down to the last scratch and ding. Gibbons’ legendary Pearly Gates – a rare 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard – is like no other guitar in the world. The Gibson Custom Shop and Billy Gibbons himself took painstaking steps to make sure the replica of this sacred instrument is true to its every form. There are three different models, all in very limited quantities. Gibbons was a young musician weaned on blues and rock in Texas. After years of listening to such greats as Eric Clapton, Gibbons began his search for his first Les Paul guitar. His search included a ’58 Flying V but the guitar that he was destined to find and nickname ‘Pearly Gates’ was a ’59 Les Paul. It didn’t come to Gibbons right away but through a girlfriend, a thirties model Packard automobile and part in a movie. Gibbons notes that in the early days of the band they acquired a Packard automobile. It was a huge vehicle that caused a stir on the road. Not long after they acquired the vehicle one of their girlfriends needed a way to get to California to try out for a movie part. The band gave her the Packard to get there and the girlfriend got the part. Thinking the car had special powers, they named it ‘Pearly Gates.’ Later the girlfriend sold the car to a collector and sent the money to the band. The money arrived the same day Gibbons got an offer to buy an old guitar, a ’59 Sunburst Les Paul, he bought it. After calling the girlfriend to discuss the circumstances both agreed that the money went for a good cause and since it came from the Packard they decided to keep the name ‘Pearly Gates’ for the guitar and the rest is history. Billy continues to make divine music to this day on the legendary instrument. The ’59 Gibson Les Paul is one of the most desirable guitars today.
The Billy Gibbons ‘Pearly Gates’ Les Paul Standard will be produced in a very limited quantity of only 350 guitars – 250 will receive Gibson Custom’s patented V.O.S. finish, 50 will be aged to look exactly like the original Pearly Gates, and another 50 will aged and personally signed and played by Gibbons himself.

Lady GaGa wouldn’t be American Idol judge LADY GAGA has vowed never to sit on the American Idol judging panel, because it isn’t her job to tell wannabe singers if they have what it takes. The Just Dance pop sensation got her start in the music industry writing songs for established acts such as Britney Spears and the Pussycat Dolls before carving out a successful solo career. And her slow rise to the top has shown her she could never take part in auditioning artists on a TV talent show, insisting every musician has the right to try for stardom. She said: “I’ve never been asked to be a judge, but I wouldn’t say yes if I was. “I don’t believe it’s right to judge music. It’s so personal. Right now I’m possessed with this incredible instinctual energy to write joyous melodies. I don’t know where it’s coming from.”
The 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Prize ‘Albums of the Year’ will be revealed at 11.30am on Tuesday 21 July 2009. The announcement will be made by presenter and broadcaster Lauren Laverne and will be hosted by The Hospital Club in Covent Garden, the club for the creative industries. The Barclaycard Mercury Prize, which is open to all genres of music, has received more entries than ever before in 2009. The shortlist of 12 ‘Albums of the Year’ is chosen by an independent judging panel, which includes musicians, producers, presenters and music journalists. The panel’s decision is based solely on the music on the albums rather than on commercial sales success.
The Prize recognises and celebrates the UK Albums of the Year and has a reputation for highlighting both new talent and more established bands and artists. Albums released between July 2008 and July 2009 are eligible for this year’s Prize. 2008 winners, Elbow, enjoyed a significant rise in profile and uplift in sales of their album ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ after picking up the Prize last year.
The Prize’s Chair of Judges, Simon Frith said: “It’s been an intriguing year for UK music and we once again saw a rise in the number of albums entered for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize. One of the continuing developments is the blurring of genres, with musicians clearly being influenced by a wide-range of sources”. The overall winner of the 2009 Prize will be decided and announced at the Barclaycard Mercury Prize Awards Show, which will be broadcast live on BBC Two on Tuesday 8 September 2009. Lauren Laverne will present the programme, with the Awards Show event itself hosted by Jools Holland. A second programme will also be broadcast on Friday 11 September also on BBC Two.
