Simon Cowell teams with Will Smith for DJ competition show

DJ culture has definitely gone mainstream. Several big name disc jockeys are heating the charts with their own releases, while others are vying for Grammy awards.

So it doesn’t come as such a surprise that Simon Cowell, of “American Idol” and “X Factor” fame, has teamed up with actor/singer Will Smith to find the next hot DJ.

Cowell’s Syco Entertainment announced a partnership with Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment to create the new show, Cowell announced Thursday.

In the statement, Cowell said, “We have been working on this show for over a year and we wanted to partner with the right people. DJs are the new rock stars; it feels like the right time to make this show.”

Pinkett-Smith added, “This show will comb the world to find a new breed of talent.”

Simon Cowell renovating US mansion

Simon Cowell is reportedly spending around £1.2 million on renovating his US mansion.

The music mogul is preparing for the launch of his latest TV venture, US X Factor, which will see him introduce the successful singing competition franchise to American screens.

The star, who is reportedly earning £45 million per year for the show, plans to spend his wealth on some extravagant home improvements.

British newspaper The Sun is reporting that builders will be renovating his Beverly Hills home while he shoots US X Factor.

“He is redoing the entry way, changing all the windows as well as repainting and adding a new state-of-the-art movie theatre. He has done this so in future he can watch repeats of his shows as if he was in the audience,’ claimed a source.

“The new look will cost roughly £1.2 million.”

It has been claimed Simon may even offer neighbours the chance to go on a spa break in a bid to reduce complaints about the disruption. Apparently some local residents were angered by renovations he carried out in 2009.

“He does feel bad for causing the neighbours trouble and has offered to buy them spa days to help them relax,” added the source.

X Factor will premiere in the US next month, with Simon being joined by fellow judges Nicole Scherzinger, L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul.

Paula has spoken to TV Biz about her plans to cause havoc on the show. Despite being good pals with Simon from their time as judges on American Idol, she has formed a strong alliance with Nicole.

“He’s going to wish that he never hired me,’ she laughed.

“Nicole and me are to be feared because we are fierce. We are performers. We understand the spirit and psyche of artists.”

Simon Cowell turns up late to the US ‘X Factor’ auditions

The music mogul ‘ who appears on the judging panel of the show alongside Paula Abdul, L.A. Reid and Nicole Scherzinger ‘ blamed a helicopter falling on his car for his tardiness, and L.A. revealed the British star is often late.
He told the crowd: ‘We are going to star without him. We don’t want you to have to wait and he’s always late. This time we’re going to get rolling, Simon or no Simon.’

Discussing his plight with the crowd, Simon joked he had a busy morning.

He said: ‘ had quite a hectic day. I’m very sorry.’

The 51-year-old star arrived during the middle of an audition, and when the participant turned out to be good, he took the credit.

An audience member told Digital Spy: ‘Simon was clearly delighted to arrive in the middle of a fantastic audition too – and naturally took full credit for it being so great. There were no complaints from him when the audience went even more crazy to see him.”

The US ‘X Factor’ has been beset with issues since it began in May ‘ original judge Cheryl Cole was replaced by Nicola when she reportedly failed to gel with Paula, who worked with Simon on ‘American Idol’.

Simon Cowell thought’ Cheryl Cole would accept his offer to return to the US ‘X Factor’

Simon Cowell ‘genuinely thought’ Cheryl Cole would accept his offer to return to the US ‘X Factor’.

The 27-year-old singer was reportedly sacked from the show after just four auditions nearly two weeks ago and although she was asked to return on Saturday (04.06.11), Cheryl – who Simon said was difficult to get in touch with during the incident – refused and was officially replaced by Nicole Scherzinger.

Speaking to Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper, he said: “We got to the point on Saturday when we genuinely thought she was going to accept the offer.

Again neither she (Cheryl) nor they ( and her management) returned any calls.”

However, Simon – who claims he “did the right thing” – apologised to Cheryl and revealed he hopes they can work together again in the future.

He added: “I apologise that all this has become public and I understand the stress she is under.”

A statement from Fox, Fremantlemedia North America and Syco TV earlier today revealed Nicole will join Simon, Paula Abdul and L.A. Reid on the judging panel of the show.

It read: “Nicole Scherzinger will be replacing Cheryl Cole on the judging panel of ‘The X Factor’.

“Nicole will join Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul on their search across America to find the next global superstar or group to win the life-changing $5 million dollar recording deal.

“Nicole has previously joined Simon Cowell as a guest judge on ‘The X Factor’ for the UK version of the show in 2010. Steve Jones will act as sole host of ‘The X Factor’.”

Simon Cowell feels like he has ‘lost a lover’ after falling out with Cheryl Cole

The 51-year-old music mogul ‘ who is thought to be upset at having to let her go from the US version of ‘The X Factor’ and replace her with Nicole Scherzinger ‘ is worried about their relationship and thinks the pair may never talk again.

A source said: “He was saying, ‘She’s had it with me. I’ve hurt her and she won’t forgive me for this.’

“He is really worried that she won’t speak to him ever again. Simon feels guilty as hell about what has happened to Cheryl, he has admitted it was a cock-up but she won’t hear him out.

“They used to be so close. She’d text him round the clock for advice. Now she can’t bring herself to speak to him. He feels like he’s lost a lover.”

Simon made his first public appearance since her leaving the US show on the semi-final of UK TV show ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ last night (30.05.11), but Cheryl ‘ who has worked closely with the music mogul since joining the UK version of ‘The X Factor’ in 2008 – reportedly did not watch and instead searched for holidays on the internet.

Another source told The Sun newspaper: “Cheryl had no intention of watching Simon’s big night. It was the last thing she would be interested in.

“She still feels badly let down and seeing his face will make her more upset. Cheryl spent most of the evening checking out possible holiday destinations. She can’t wait to get as far away as possible from all this attention as possible and was eyeing up destinations in the middle of nowhere.”

Simon Cowell has always been ‘torn’ between Cheryl Cole and Nicole Scherzinger

The music mogul had spent months debating who should join him on the judging panel for the US version of ‘The X Factor’ and while he initially went with fellow Brit Cheryl, it has now been claimed she has been replaced by Nicole.

Insiders claim Simon ‘ who is also on the panel with Paula Abdul and L.A. Reid and worked with Cheryl on the UK version for three series ‘ knew he had to change things because the chemistry between the original judges wasn’t right and felt the former Pussycat Dolls star ‘ who was originally meant to co-host alongside Steve Jones – would fit in better than Cheryl.

A source told “Throughout the whole decision making process, Simon was really torn between Cheryl and Nicole. He absolutely loved Nicole, really felt like she was the right one, but also knew his chemistry with Cheryl had been great before in the UK. He finally decided on the more comfortable option and chose Cheryl.

“With the pressure building for this show to be a success, Cheryl was a much bigger risk and instinctively, as time went on, Nicole felt more and more like the right choice. Nicole was so disappointed before when she wasn’t picked, but now, thankfully, she is in the role she was always meant for. And Simon knows that.”

Simon knows he’s under huge pressure for the show to be a hit and accepted there would be hard decisions to make along the way.

The source added: “It’s his name on the line all the way through this — it literally can’t fail. The chemistry has to be right; it’s the vital element that holds this whole thing together. The judges’ connection with the audience could make or break the entire project.”

It has yet to be confirmed whether Cheryl has been dropped but insiders claim she has flown back to the UK and is now in hiding.

Simon Cowell has blasted Sir Elton John for criticising TV talent shows

The ‘X Factor’ boss ‘ who has previously also judged ‘American Idol’ and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ – accused the ‘Rocket Man’ singer of being selfish and money-orientated after he accused the shows of being boring and exploiting the artists who take part. He said: “Well, look. This is somebody who charges what, a million dollars a private gig? Two million dollars, you know? I don’t know whether he’s concerned about himself — maybe he is.” Simon, 51, also insists he won’t take critics such as Elton seriously until they use their wealth and success to help aspiring musicians in the same way his shows do. He told TV talk show host Piers Morgan: “They always bleat on that we’re not giving other people a chance. And I always want to say to them, ‘I tell you what, you just made a million dollars off your last private gig. Go and give it to a bunch of young musicians you care about, put them in the studio. Go and nurture them. Go and spend some time looking after them. Then I’ll buy your argument.’ “They’re only worried about themselves.” Last year, Elton revealed he turned down appearing on the judging panel of ‘American Idol’ because he found reality television ‘a**e-paralysingly brain crippling”. Meanwhile, UK ‘  Factor’ presenter Dermot O’Leary has been told he will not be fronting the programme when it launches in the US because Simon wants to adopt a dual-host format and is seeking a ‘non-conventional’ female singer and a male ‘pin-up’ musician. Despite missing out, Dermot, 37, insists he is not too upset as he fared better than other British hopefuls. He said: ‘ am obviously disappointed that I didn’t get the American gig. I would have loved a crack at it. At least I was the only Brit to make the shortlist.’ Simon’s full interview with Piers will air on CNN international on Monday (14.03.11).

The singer, actress and reality TV star is reportedly at the top of Simon Cowell’s list to take on one of the coveted judge-and-mentor roles on the show when it launches later this year. A source told People: “There [are] loads of conversations happening at the moment. No one has been offered a judging role yet as new names keep coming forward who want the role, but there are some frontrunners and it’s fair to say Jessica is one of them. She’s very keen. “She knows what she is talking about [and] is talented and likable. But Simon’s not in a rush to decide. The judges have to mentor on ‘The X Factor’ – it’s more than just turning up for a few hours a week to appear on TV.”  Jessica is not the only person in the frame for a role, it was revealed yesterday that record executive Tony Mottola – ex-husband of Mariah Carey and former boss of Sony Music – is also being considered. An insider said: “Simon and Tommy have known each other for years since their days at Sony and Simon has wanted to get Tommy on board one of his shows for a long time. “They get on extremely well and this could be the moment where they finally get on screen together. Tommy’s from the Bronx in New York, he’s tough talking, doesn’t pull any punches and will make great TV.” Other people mentioned as possibilities include Nicole Scherzinger, Mariah Carey, and Cheryl Cole.

The ‘Promise This’ singer is not as generous as she makes out to be, according to her friend Simon Cowell, who she is a judge with on UK TV talent show ‘The X Factor’. Simon said: ‘Whenever you go to an event and you get a bag of freebies, Cheryl repackages them and gives them to somebody else. I always give mine to charity.’ Simon also branded Cheryl ‘narcissistic’ after previously accusing her of copying the ‘salute’ gesture he used to do for fans. He added to Syco: ‘We’ve established that she won’t be copying my salute anymore. She says it’s a salute to Cheryl’s Army, which is so narcissistic! I don’t think she realises how insane that sounds.’ Cheryl isn’t the only ‘X Factor’ star to pass on the freebies she is given because of her celebrity status. Earlier this year, Dannii Minogue admitted she and her sister, singer Kylie Minogue, often swap the clothes they are given because they are different sizes. She said: “I get so much gorgeous stuff. I’m slightly bigger than her, so if she gets something a bit big, she’ll give it to me, and if I get something too small, it goes her way.”
