Manolo Blahnik Shows Off Sketching Skills On “The Martha Stewart” Show. Manolo Blahnik, shoe designer of “Sex and the City” fame, was mentioned – and appeared – on another TV show. The founder of his self-named, high-end shoe brand was a guest on “The Martha Stewart Show” last Friday. Blahnik reportedly hates the term “muse,” but it seemed as though host Martha Stewart was his on the show. He demonstrated his design process of sketching a one-of-a-kind shoe in front of a live studio audience on canvas with paint. After the spontaneous sketch, Stewart asked him what the inspiration was behind the sketch of a brown high heel. “You. And the show and food,” he said. Blahnik’s food inspiration came in the form of the milkshakes Stewart and he made, reportedly an obsession of Blahnik’s, when he and Martha created two different shakes, Coconut-Chocolate and Salted Caramel Pecan. The shoe designer also talked about growing up and how he got his start in the shoe business. He started sketching shoes when he was about six or seven years old, he told Stewart, and his mother also made her own shoes. “During the war, my mommy didn’t get the things that she liked so she made herself (espadrilles),” Blahnik said.”So she was very, very sort of crafty in that way.” He also told Stewart the engineering behind making his shoes. “(Engineering) takes a long time. Shoes are different than dresses in a sense that shoes takes a lot of months to do technically. To get the heel correct.” “I can imagine,” Stewart responded. “Just figuring out how the heel can bear the weight of a 130-pound woman, right? It’s amazing.”
First Season Of HBO’s “Hung” Comes To DVD, Blu-ray. “Hung: The Complete First Season” is currently available on DVD and Blu-ray Hi-Def. The HBO series, which focuses on a man with a most unorthodox way to deal with his personal economic crisis, was released on home format June 22 to coincide with the second season’s June 27 premiere. The DVD contains plenty of special features for followers of the show. Ray Drecker (Thomas Jane) is a Detroit high school history teacher and basketball coach whose recent life has reflected his team’s performance on the court: one long losing streak. Suffering a divorce, neighborhood harassment, a house fire and an insurmountable amount of debt, Ray is reduced to living out of a tent in his backyard. Desperate for money, he decides to employ the single asset in his life — his manhood. Teaming up with his friend Tanya, (Jane Adams), a failed poet who has her own financial difficulties, he embarks on a life as a gigolo that he must keep hidden from his family and colleagues. Also starring Charlie Saxton and Sianoa Smit-McPhee as Ray’s teenage twin children; Eddie Jemison as their stepfather; and Anne Heche as Ray’s unhappy ex-wife, the show debuted on premium cable network HBO in 2009. Among the team working on the critically acclaimed, award-winning series — nominated for Golden Globes for Jane and Adams —are Oscar winner Alexander Payne, and married writing team Dmitry Lipkin and Colette Burson. Comparable to cable shows like AMC’s “Breaking Bad” or Showtime’s “Weeds,” featuring average folks taking up a life of crime to pay the bills, the DVD and Blu-ray include extras such as audio commentaries from show creators, behind-the-scenes segments and the featurettes “The Women of ‘Hung’” and “Ray and Tanya’s Personal Ads.” “Hung: The Complete First Season” retails for $39.98 on DVD and $49.99 on Blu-ray.

Kim Cattrall Distances Herself From Her “Sex And The City” Character. Kim Cattrall wants the world to know that she is no Samantha Jones, or at least in the bedroom. The actress, who portrays the man hungry sex addict in “Sex and The City” refutes the idea that she brought in her own personal experiences to shape her onscreen alter ego. According to gossip blogger Perez Hilton, the blonde bombshell says: “Most of my life hasn’t been very fulfilling sexually. At one point in my mid-30s, I thought: ‘Maybe I’m just not a very sexual woman. I play women who are sexually aware but maybe I’m not going to be particularly active.’” Although the actress has been married three times and has written a book about sex, she says having a stable relationship is what she desires most. Cattrall explains: “I’m a serial monogamist, not shy but it takes a lot for me to initiate anything. My preference is a cleanshaven man who smells fresh and clean.” The second “Sex and the City” movie, which stars Cattrall alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristen Davis, and Cynthia Nixon, hits theaters later this month.
Twilight’s” Kellan Lutz: “I’m a God” . WireImage Kellan Lutz, who bares his fangs as Emmett Cullen in “The Twilight Saga,” is now officially a deity. “I’m a god,” the sexy vampire-turned-Calvin Klein underwear model told VMAN Magazine, referring to his latest role as the god Poseidon in next year’s “Immortals.” “I like getting hurt,” Kellan told the mag, explaining that he had his eyes set on action roles. “I don’t have tattoos, so my bruises and scars are my tattoos.” In addition to Kellan, VMAN awarded the title of Hollywood’s hottest men to four more young stars: Matthew Bomer, Noah Mills, Xavier Samuel and Ryan Kwanten. Matthew Bomer, the cowboy criminal in USA’s crime drama “White Collar,” loves the challenge of taking on complicated roles. “I like characters who aren’t perfect, that’s what’s fun for me to play as an actor: the imperfections, the shadows” he said. With the upcoming role as Samantha’s boy toy in “Sex and The City 2,” Noah Mills is climbing to the top of Hollywood’s hottest actors. But the 25-year-old is wary of capitalizing on his looks. “It’s a kind of dangerous way to live your life,” he told the mag about focusing on the nature of beauty. “Because at some point, it ends.” Meanwhile, Xavier Samuel, the newest cast member of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” was catapulted
to fame when he was cast as evil vampire Riley in the third installment of the franchise. Yet, the accomplished Australian actor said that his fame wasn’t exactly overnight. “It’s often the case that breaking actors have been breaking out for years,” Xavier xplained. Fellow Aussie actor, Ryan Kwanten of HBO’s hit series “True Blood,” made waves in the role of Jason Stackhouse, but the sex-crazed, volatile character is entirely different to the actor’s real life persona. “I’m a pretty down-to-earth, private kind of guy,” he said. “And this character is so impulsive, so lacking of any forethought or any kind of willpower. It’s great to be constantly required to throw all caution to the wind and play someone so wild.”
UAE Movie Studio Sets Up Shop in Las Vegas. An Emirati movie studio has taken the big leap and expanded its operations into the United States. Producers hope the venture will not only tap into the lucrative North American markets, but will also serve as a source of national pride and identity with the Arab characters portrayed in the new productions. Experience Media Studios, which calls itself a next generation global entertainment company, opened its doors in February 2009 in the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Just a year later it has set up an office in Las Vegas, NV. “North America accounts for more than a third of the worldwide box office, so this strategic investment is a logical next step for Experience Media Studios,” studio CEO Michael-Ryan Fletchall said in a statement. The studio has been producing regionally themed films and television shows for international audiences. Fletchall said that the new U.S. branch aimed to leverage relationships “with top-tire talent, distribution, and Middle East capital to acquire, package and produce high quality, cost effective entertainment media for U.S., Canada and worldwide audiences.” In December 2009 the studio announced its plans for an action-adventure feature film called “Abdulla Omar and the Lost Sand City.” It will feature renowned Emirati archaeologist and adventurer, Abdulla Omar, in his quest for a city hidden under the desert sands. Creating the first Emirati action hero will boost national identity, a company statement said. The announcement of the studio’s move came as the first English-language feature film produced in the UAE began global distribution. Titled “City of Life,” the film reveals the complexity of the city of Dubai and features a variety of characters such as a spoiled young Emirati man, a European stewardess and an Indian taxi driver. “With the release City of Life there is more interest in the region as a (filming) location,” Daniel Kilalea, production manager with Boomtown Productions, an international production company with offices in Dubai and Britain, told The Media Line.“The Abu Dhabi film commission is pushing the local film market as production location and it just hosted location scouts,” he said. “There is still a lot of growth to be done but we will see more features and 3-D movies [in the future].” Dubai-based director and producer Rajeev Kheror told the Media Line he was upbeat about the state of the local film industry. He added that this year’s Gulf Film Festival in Dubai was particularly successful. “It is definitely coming of age,” Kheror said. “The number of entries has improved. There have been many good films.” He said 111 films from the Gulf region alone were being screened and they ranged from feature films to documentaries, short films and animations. “Right now, short films and documentaries are in the majority. A lot of the films are student documentaries, which is encouraging because it is not a very mature industry,” Kheror said. “There will be more feature films in the future.” That said, both Dubai and Abu Dhabi have come under criticism for not living up to their portrayal as liberal and open-minded cities. Recently, the production of “Sex and the City 2,” which features the main characters traveling to the Gulf, had to relocate their filming to Morocco after the United Arab Emirates banned shooting due to the risqué content of the script.
Sarah Jessica Parker Admits She’s A Fan Of Lady Gaga. They might have different tastes in fashion, but that doesn’t stop one from admiring the other. “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker admits that she’s a fan of Lady Gaga and her unconventional and sometimes outrageous style. The on-screen Carrie Bradshaw even says that Gaga and her SATC persona share quite a few similarities when it comes to their fashion choices. According to our source, Parker says: “She breaks all the rules; she’s unconventional. It’s extremely flattering that people think she’s like Carrie.” She continues, “I want to say one thing about Lady Gaga, which is, a year and a half ago, I was in an editing room working on a project and had already downloaded as much music of hers as I could onto my iPod. And she was not in the mainstream yet, but I loved her.” The actress even admits that her young son is a fan of the “Poker Face” singer as well. “My son sang ‘Bad Romance’ for a singing contest,” she says. “That’s right, James Wilkie sang ‘Bad Romance.’” Parker can next be seen on the big screen in the highly anticipated “Sex and the City” movie in May while Lady Gaga is currently on tour.
Johnny Depp To Romance Penelope Cruz In “Pirates Of The Caribbean” Sequel. Penelope Cruz is already joining one of this Summer’s biggest sequels when she appears in “Sex and the City 2,” but now more details have been revealed about the Academy Award-winner joining another blockbuster movie franchise, “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Cruz is set to join Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow for the latest swashbuckling sequel from Disney. According to MTV who got some time to talk with “Pirates” producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Cruz will be play the daughter of legendary pirate character Blackbeard, set to be played by “Deadwood” star Ian McShane. “She brings a lot of humor to it,” said Bruckheimer of Cruz’s role in the fourth entry of the franchise, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” He also reveals that there’ll be “a little romance between Captain Jack and the character that Penelope plays.” Depp and Cruz previously collaborated on screen in the 2001 drug drama “Blow,” where they played real-life couple George Jung and Mirtha Jung. Rob Marshall, who directed Cruz in last year’s Oscar-nominated musical “Nine,” is taking over directorial duties for Gore Verbinski, who directed the first three entries in the “Pirates” saga. Along with Depp, Geoffrey Rush is also expected to return to the series as Captain Barbossa. “Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides” is expected to start filming in June for a Summer 2011 release.
“Sex and the City” and “Gossip Girl” aside, TV’s not known for its high fashion quotient. But some of its least stylish players hail from the reality TV realm. True, these regular style offenders don’t have the advantage of working with a costume designer or stylist on set. But after searing our eyes with dozens of bejeweled Ed Hardy T-shirts (Jon Gosselin) and a shocking amount of cleavage (Heidi Montag) we find our empathy in short supply. Continue reading →
