“Today” Opens Wedding Contest To Same-Sex Couples. The “Today Show” is changing its annual wedding contest rules to allow same-sex couple to apply. After meeting with gay and lesbian activists on Thursday, the NBC morning show decided to extend the deadline of applications to wait for gay couples to submit. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation met with the NBC executives to voice their concerns on why same-sex couples are not allowed to enter their “Modern Wedding Contest.” The application on the show included only “bride” and “groom” as options for applicants. NBC first argued that “the couple must be able to be legally married in New York, which is where the wedding will take place.” But GLAAD pointed out that the state recognizes same-sex marriage licenses in other states. Same-sex couples can obtain their marriage licenses in Iowa, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Washington, D.C. The peacock network, after meeting with GLAAD, then announced that it has listened to the community concerns. It has now opened the contest to same-sex couples and extended the deadline of submissions to Monday, July 12. Finalists will be announced later this year and the wedding will take place live on the “Today Show.”
