Dolly Parton: Movie roles need heels

Dolly Parton insists she “isn”t a great actress” so she would rather stick to roles that include her signature “high heels and big hair”.

The glamorous country singer stars in musical comedy Joyful Noise alongside Queen Latifah. Dolly has joked that she would try out method acting and put on 56lbs. for a big screen role, but would rather not ruin the look she is best known for.

“I could easily put it on, but I’d never be able to get it off again because I love my food so much,” she told British newspaper The Daily Mail.

“But to tell you the truth, I’m not a great actress and I have to do a part that’s close to me. I could probably be a better actress if I really dug deep and tore myself down, but I’m more confident on screen when I can wear my high heels and my big hair. I’d feel like I was naked otherwise.”

Dolly plays a larger-than-life woman who comes to blows with Latifah’s character over how to win a national choir competition in the movie. The two stars are involved in a cat fight on screen when Latifah”s character makes a mean reference to Dolly”s surgical enhancements.

The 66-year-old songstress isn”t fazed by jokes about her appearance.

“I didn’t have a problem with that line about procedures. I’ve always admitted to having nips and tucks here and there, and I told the director, ”Let her dig me deep, but let me get back at her too,”” she smiled.

“So we included a line for Queen Latifah where I told her I had a good lipo doctor if she needed one. It was tit for tat, if you’ll pardon the expression. But I’ve been around a long time and I’m pretty open about everything. I may as well make fun of myself before anyone else does.”

The country singer admires the eccentric pop star and was so impressed with Gaga’s country-style version of her own hit ‘Born This Way’ she has decided they would make a great song together.

She told E! Online: “I think it’s great. It’s just wonderful. I love her. Maybe we should do something together.”

The ‘Nine ’til Five’ star then joked that she could name herself after a chocolate snack popular in her native southern America to sound similar to Gaga’s own unusual self-styled moniker.

She quipped: “GooGoo and Gaga! You know those GooGoo candy bars in Nashville? I could be Lady GooGoo.”

Although more advanced in years, Dolly is similar to the 25-year-old ‘Poker Face’ singer because both are proud of their eccentricities and are seemingly unconcerned with what others think of them.

The 65-year-old music legend said: “I really do think that I stand for being proud of who you are and not worrying a lick about what other people think, really. I feel fortunate that I’ve never had to be anything other than myself.”

One star Dolly has already teamed up with is Queen Latifah.

The two star as opposing choir members in new musical movie ‘Joyful Noise’ and they sing together on two tracks.

Dolly said: “I wrote four of the numbers. There are a couple we got to do together. There’s a lot of great music in the movie”.

For the 10th anniversary of the “BET Awards,” the network continues to add more exciting performances to its already impressive roster. Along with performances from Kanye West, Diddy, and Nicki Minaj, Eminem, Alicia Keys, Usher, and T-Pain have also been added to the line-up. Eminem, whose latest album “Recovery” hits stores just days before the show, will hit the stage, while “Best Female R&B Artist” nominee Alicia Keys is also set to perform. Another nominee, Usher, in the running for “Best Male R&B Artist,” will also perform, as well as T-Pain.The 2010 BET Awards, airing Sunday, June 27th on BET, will also feature performances Drake, Ludacris, T.I., Rick Ross, and Trey. Grammy Award-winner and Oscar nominee Queen Latifah will host. Prince will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award during this year’s show, while John Legend will receive this year’s Humanitarian Award. The 10th anniversary of the BET Awards is also sure to feature some major surprises. Some past memorable performances include TLC, SWV, and EnVogue hitting the stage together, a reunion of The Fugees, a hosting stint from Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, and last year’s emotional tribute to Michael Jackson.

Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez Earn BET Award Nominations

The BET Awards are getting a little more inclusive this year. While Jay-Z leads the pack of nominations, followed by Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Trey Songz, and Melanie Fiona, there’s also a nod for Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. No need to adjust your screens. Bieber earned a nomination for Best New Artist. He’s up against Melanie Fiona, Nicki Minaj, Wale, and Young Money. Bieber has appeared on BET as his popularity started to rise, including performing his single “Baby” on the network’s “106 & Park” and participating in their “SOS Help For Haiti Benefit.” Gomez earns her nomination for the YoungStars Award, where she’s up against Keke Palmer, Lil JJ, Willow Smith, and Tyler James Williams. Unlike the Biebs, I’m not sure the words “Selena” and “Gomez” have been uttered together on BET. The 2010 BET Awards, airing Sunday, June 27th on BET, will feature performances Drake, Diddy, Nicki Minaj, Trey Songz, and others yet to be announced. Grammy Award-winner and Oscar nominee Queen Latifah has been tapped to host.   “We are thrilled that Queen Latifah is going to host the BET AWARDS ’10,” said Stephen Hill, President of Music Programming and Specials for BET. “Her versatility as a performer perfectly matches the dynamism of our show. This will be the perfect 10. Get ready for stirring performances, a surprise that will knock you out and massive quantities of fun; all helmed by ‘The Queen.’” Other than possible appearances by Bieber and Gomez, the 10th anniversary of the BET Awards is also sure to feature some major surprises. Some past memorable performances include TLC, SWV, and EnVogue hitting the stage together, a reunion of The Fugees, a hosting stint from Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, and last year’s emotional tribute to Michael Jackson.

MGMT on the LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, CBS

Tu 5/11: Queen Latifah, Will Forte, MGMT tonight on the LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, CBS.  Formed: 2002 in Brooklyn, NY. Finding an unlikely middle point between Suicide’s hostile proto-electro punk art noise and the sardonic, studied, but ultimately pop-friendly sound of the Flaming Lips, MGMT started as electroclash musical terrorists but quickly transmogrified into an eclectic, brainy pop group with heavy psychedelic overtones. MGMT first formed in 2002, during Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden’s freshman year as art students at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. At first the band was known as the Management, and its shows consisted mostly of backing tapes, synthesizers, and prerecorded vocals playing as Goldwasser and Van Wyngarden engaged the audience in a manner somewhere between performance art and good old-fashioned punky hostility. By their senior year, things had toned down considerably on-stage and the duo was augmenting its live sound with backing musicians. Upon graduating, MGMT released an electro-rock EP, Time to Pretend, on the tiny indie Cantora Records in 2005. Good reviews, especially for the title track, and extensive touring brought the duo to the attention of British producer Steve Lillywhite in his role as an A&R executive for Columbia Records, which signed the band for a major long-term deal in 2006. Regrouping in Brooklyn, the duo enlisted producer Dave Fridmann to create the entirely different-sounding Oracular Spectacular, a far more musically expansive album that was released digitally in late 2007 (a traditional CD release followed in January 2008). Additionally, MGMT served as Of Montreal’s opening act for their extensive 2007 tour, during which Van Wyngarden and Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes began sketching out ideas for a new collaboration called Blikk Fang.

Charlize Theron, Robert Downey Jr. Among New Oscars Presenters Announced

Charlize Theron and Robert Downey Jr. are a couple more stars you can expect to see at the Academy Awards this Sunday. According to People.com, the team behind the ceremony announced Theron, Downey Jr., and a slew of other stars who’ll be presenting Oscars to the winners yesterday.  Theron at the Oscars in 2000 (Bauer Griffin)
Theron scored a Best Actress prize in 2003 for her turn as a killer in Monster, and she’s a constant fixture on the red carpet (we can’t wait to see her gown!) As for Downey, he was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category last year for Tropic Thunder but lost out to the late Heath Ledger. And even though he didn’t score a nod this time around for Sherlock Holmes, he did win a Golden Globe award for that performance. In addition to these two, Oscar winners Barbra Streisand and Kathy Bates will be joining the bunch. People.com reports that Queen Latifah, Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta are on the roster as well.    Sounds like a lively bunch! Teen favorites like Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner are also attending this year, in addition to comedians Steve Carell and Tina Fey, so we can definitely expect some laughs.

“Valentine’s Day” Follow-Up Already In The Works No, it’s not April Fools’ Day. The upcoming romantic comedy “Valentine’s Day” could already have a sort-of sequel in the works.  It’s only a sort-of sequel in that it’s not “Valentine’s Day 2,” but “New Year’s Eve.” According to Deadline Hollywood, “Valentine’s Day”-scribe Katherine Fugate just drafted “New Year’s Eve,” with producers Toby Emmerich and Richard Brener, as well as Warner Bros execs set to look it over. “New Year’s Eve” would follow the same ensemble formula, as used in “Valentine’s Day” and less so in last year’s “He’s Just Not That Into You.” Although both films feature more A-list stars than most films currently in theaters combined, the budget for both remain under $50 million.  “New Year’s Eve,” which would follow characters as the clock ticks to midnight in New York, may re-enlist Garry Marshall as director and even feature some of the same actors from “Valentine’s Day.”  “Valentine’s Day,” hitting theaters Friday, February 12th, stars Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifah, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Jamie Foxx, Taylor Lautner, and Taylor Swift, among others

“Valentine’s Day” Marketers Hide Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane Gay Storyline From Advertising

Topher Grace

The trailers for “Valentine’s Day” pack a lot of scenes into them. The film has a star-studded cast of at least a dozen A-listers. But while you’ll catch glimpses of Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner kissing on the football field, Ashton Kutcher proposing to Jessica Alba, and Anne Hathaway straddling Topher Grace in bed, you won’t see any signs of a major gay storyline in the film. The heads of marketing over at Warner Bros. chose to disguise it instead.
“Hangover” star Bradley Cooper, who also stars in the upcoming macho actioner “The A-Team,” gets plenty of face time in the promos with Julia Roberts. They even share some warm looks and coy smiles. But Cooper is actually playing a gay man who has a closeted Football player boyfriend, played by “McSteamy” himself Eric Dane.  But you wouldn’t know this from any of the trailers. In fact, Dane doesn’t appear in the trailers at all except for his name and photo when running through the cast list. However, you will see scenes of every other cast member in the film worth noting.  “Valentine’s Day,” with its gay storyline in tact, will hit theaters on February 11th. The film also stars Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Biel, Patrick Dempsey, Emma Roberts, Shirley McLaine, and more.

Janet Jackson, Jamie Foxx Lead Michael Jackson Tribute at BET Awards

janet-jacksonjamie-foxxRather than mourn Michael Jackson’s death, the celebrities who took to the stage at the 2009 BET awards celebrated the memory of the King of Pop with pumped-up performances, heartfelt words and a surprise appearance by the star’s own sister Janet Jackson.  The Shrine Auditorium ceremony kicked off with a tribute to young Michael, as ’80′s idols New Edition dressed up in funky ’70s-era clothes to sing the Jackson 5′s “ABC” and “The Love You Save.”  Host Jamie Foxx emerged wearing an outfit reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s famous “Beat It” gear: red leather jacket, cropped black pants, high white socks and black loafers. The Oscar winner then performed a dance sequence from Jackson’s video, moonwalking (and stumbling) across the stage to honor the pop superstar.  “We are here for the greatest. There’s no need to be sad,” said Foxx to a star-studded audience that included Diddy, Tyra Banks and Lil Wayne.  Other notable performances included Beyoncé’s costume-changing medley of “Ave Maria” and Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel,” Ciara’s take on Jackson’s “Heal the World” and Queen Latifah’s duet with Mary Mary on the gospel duo’s “God in Me.”  And in keeping with the night’s positive vibe, Alicia Keys and Wyclef Jean both received humanitarian awards for their charitable works. Tributes to the late star continued throughout the night, and father Joe Jackson shed a tear in the audience after Ne-Yo’s performance of the King of Pop’s “Lady in My Life.”  (Jackson protégé Usher told  he had hoped to make the ceremony but couldn’t get back from overseas in time; I look forward to seeing the show and I plan to work on a tribute to Michael Jackson when I return,” he said.) As the awards came to an end, Janet Jackson surprised the crowd by taking the stage to give thanks to fans for their support in the wake of her brother’s death.  “My entire family wanted to be here tonight, but it was just too painful, so they elected me to be here,” Janet Jackson said.  “I’d just like to say, to you, Michael is an icon, to us, Michael is family. And he will forever live in all of our hearts. On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for all of your love, thank you for all of your support. We miss him so much.”  After she left the stage, Foxx and Ne-Yo closed the show with the Jackson 5′s “I’ll Be There.”  Here’s the complete list of winners from the 2009 BET Awards:

2009 BET Awards Become the Michael Jackson Tribute Show

bet-awardsThe 2009 BET Awards were already set to be a big event, but now the BET Awards are something else entirely. The 2009 BET Awards had to be completely overhauled in three days time, as the BET Awards are now no longer about today’s performers and nominees. It is expected that the 2009 BET  2009 BET Awards Become the Michael Jackson Tribute Show Awards are about to become the Michael Jackson tribute show instead, as the BET Awards are undergoing “a total overhaul” to honor the King of Pop. The BET Awards had about 72 hours to work in as many Michael Jackson tributes as they could. As a result, more performers have been invited to the show, the BET Awards are expected to go on a half hour longer, and other performers had to completely change their act. Performers like Beyonce and Ne-Yo have already changed their performances to make them Jackson-related. Kanye West, Queen Latifah, Solja Boy, T-Pain and more announced and unannounced guests will also be in attendance.  BET network chairman Debra L. Lee called the ordeal “a total overhaul.” As such, any awards and any non-Jackson performances will likely be completely overshadowed. Jamie Foxx’s hosting performance will probably also have a fair share of Jackson references, if not Jackson jokes.  The 2009 BET Awards will technically still go on with the usual business of giving awards and having a lot of songs. But Michael Jackson will undoubtedly be the star of the show, no matter what.  BET will be paying these tributes to Michael Jackson, as his legacy in the African-American community continues to be debated. After his death, Jackson was hailed as breaking barriers for young black singers, opening the door for MTV to feature African-American performers after “Thriller” pretty much forced them to.  But the controversy over his skin changes, and the lingering notion that he sold out his “blackness” over time, made Jackson as controversial in the black community as he was everywhere else.
