Primal Scream reveal that Kylie Minogue wanted to work with them. The Australian singer ‘ who has previously collaborated with artists including Nick Cave and Manic Street Preachers ‘ approached the ‘Loaded’ hitmakers to write a track for her, but the group were having too many problems to accept. Frontman Bobby Gillespie revealed: ‘We met her twice ‘ at a photoshoot and then she came to a gig in Australia. She was lovely. ‘ think she was looking for us to write a song for her and make a record with her. But we were having problems even writing songs for ourselves at that point. So it never happened.’ Primal Scream ‘ who were previously famed for their drink and drug-fuelled partying ‘ recently marked 25 years since the release of their first single ‘All Fall Down’ but the group are surprised their career has lasted so long. Asked if he ever expected the group to be around 25 years, 48-year-old Bobby admitted to Q magazine: ‘ didn’t think I’d be alive then. I probably didn’t want to be alive. Seriously. ‘So the answer is no. But I always knew we were good. It was always a serious thing. It wasn’t like a part-time thing before you go back to doing a real job.

The Roundhouse and EMI dedicate September to emerging talent with 30/30

The Roundhouse and EMI dedicate September to emerging talent with 30/30. The Roundhouse has joined forces with EMI for the second year for 30/30, a groundbreaking youth project designed to cultivate and develop new and emerging talent. Every day this September, 30/30 will offer unsigned artists – between the ages of 16-25 – free recording time in the Roundhouse’s PRS/EMI Live Music Studio, along with top guest producers to professionally record and mix their track for free. Across the summer, the Roundhouse invited unsigned artists to submit their tracks for a chance to be included in 30/30 ‘ the result was an eclectic mix of music from hopefuls across the UK which has been whittled down to a selection of winners, ranging from Brighton’s young indie hopeful Max Pope to acoustic folk outfit Ajimal from North Shields. Confirmed producers include Joe Fields (Amy MacDonald, Mystery Jets), Kevin Paul (Mute Records artists including Nick Cave and Depeche Mode, David Bowie), and Abbey Road Studio’s Pete Hutchings and Mirek Stiles. On 13 October, the lucky acts chosen by the Roundhouse team will have the opportunity to put their questions to a panel of EMI experts from all areas of the music industry – from artist management and marketing, through to publishing and A&R. Last year’s project was a huge success, attracting submissions from hundreds of aspiring artists, which culminated in the 30/30 Compilation Album 2009, a collection of 30 tracks featuring artists such as Ghosts You Echo, Hella Better Dancer and Ken Kobayashi, all of which have since signed recording deals with the Roundhouse’s in-house label, Roundhouse Records. Albums cost just £8 and all proceeds go directly back into providing more opportunities to aspiring musicians.

The dark edges of Mika’s deceptively sunny pop

The dark edges of Mika's deceptively sunny popAs far as Oedipal odes to obsessively consuming every shred of a new lover’s individual identity go, Mika’s song “Touches You” from his new album “The Boy Who Knew Too Much” is actually pretty charming. It’s a rollicking, vampy piano-pop burner with a seriously creepy chorus:  “I want to be your sister, and your Continue reading →

Paolo Nutini releases ‘Pencil Full Of Lead’

Paolo NutinionrtvPaolo Nutini releases his exuberant new single ‘Pencil Full Of Lead’ on October 26 – the third to be taken from his critically-acclaimed No.1 album ‘Sunny Side Up’, which has sold over 400,000 copies so far and has been a permanent fixture in the Top Ten since its June 1 release. Written by Paolo Nutini and produced by Paolo and Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon), ‘Pencil Full Of Lead’, one of the album’s many highlights, sees Paolo’s vocals bounce along to the tune’s ragtime pop at their show-stopping best. Paolo reckons s the songs of ‘Sunny Side Up’ are already changing the way he performs. ‘I have to stand with my chest out,’ he says. ‘Different things are coming out. This record’s called ‘Sunny Side Up’ for a reason. I want to keep it positive.’ To coincide with Paolo’s 15-date UK Tour, Continue reading →

Nick Cave releases new book soundtrack

nick_caveNICK CAVE has released a soundtrack for his new book, it has been reported.  As reports NME, the album can be bought as part of the audio version of The Death Of Bunny Munro, from the iPhone App Store now.  Cave said: “The fact that the reader can choose his or her own experience is interesting because the true meaning of a book lies in the reader’s own interpretation and the circumstances of that interpretation.”   Artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, who produced and sound-directed the project, said it offers users a unique listening experience. They said: “We’ve not heard anything like this before – the result sits somewhere between a film soundtrack, a radio play and a hallucination.”  An app for The Death Of Bunny Munro, Cave’s sixth book, is exclusively available to iPhone and iPod Touch users now, ahead of the hardback version of the book’s release on September 9.

The Bookhouse Boys announce live dates

bookhouse-boysHaving enjoyed a raucous welcome around the country on their first UK tour earlier this year, The Bookhouse Boys announce a fresh string of live dates culminating at London’s Bush Hall on April 16th.  A live phenomenon, with a veritable feast of mariachi brass, a duo of drummers and girl-boy vocals; they realise euphoric surf guitar and Ennio Morricone soundscapes of their debut album, with a visceral Cramps-esque prosecution and Nick Cave croon.

UK TOUR DATES: 11th APRIL GLASGOW, Twisted Wheel; 12th APRIL ABERDEEN, Moshulu; 13th APRIL NEWCASTLE, Cluny; 14th APRIL NOTTINGHAM, Bodega; 15th APRIL OXFORD, Bullingdon Arms; 16th APRIL LONDON, Bush Hall;

The Bookhouse Boys opened 2009 with their maiden UK tour, having lit up Festival stages and enjoyed widespread critical acclaim for debut album in 2008. Building on the underground success of debut vinyl releases Tonight and Dead, the bands single Can’t Help Myself was picked up by Zane Lowe at Radio 1, playlisted at XFM, and enjoyed the renewed support of long term fans Steve Lamacq and Nemone at 6Music.
