MySpace slashes staff. News Corporation has slashed the staff of MySpace worldwide by a reported 50% and is closing all of its operations outside the United States. Staff in Sydney, were MySpace is HQ’d in Australia, were told this morning that they were out of work. MySpace CEO Mike Jones announced the cutbacks as a ‘significant organizational restructure’. About 500 employees of the worldwide 1,100 staff have been made redundant. Jones said the changes were to make a ‘clear path for sustained growth and profitability’. The Wall Street Journal, also a News Corp property, has reported that the company is planning to sell MySpace. The WSJ reported that Yahoo has been approached as a potential buyer. MySpace reported a loss of $165 million in the financial quarter ending September 30, 2010. News Corp bought the site for $580 million in 2005 but since then the rise of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube has decimated the MySpace audience.

Supermodel Miranda Kerr Reveals Baby Bump. Miranda Kerr has revealed the proof of her pregnancy for the first time in a video to promote her new organic skincare line. The Australian supermodel, who recently married Orlando Bloom in a secret ceremony, unveils her tiny baby bump while she practices yoga in the video. Kerr, 27, announced last month that she is expecting her first child with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star. And although she’s already in her fourth month, her bump displays just a small rise from her diminutive figure. The video is for her organic skincare line Kora, in which she can be seen practicing yoga and speaking on her healthy lifestyle. The supermodel and the actor announced their engagement in June. A month later, they announced that they had married in “an intimate ceremony,” prompting speculations that they had speedy wedding because she was pregnant. In August, Kerr admitted to the Spanish edition of Vogue that she already is four months along.

Scarlett Johansson has bought a house in Louisiana . The actress and her husband Ryan Reynolds have splashed out on a modest two-storey property, which comes with spacious grounds and a number of outbuildings. The couple are said to be working on the colonial-style property at the moment, adding eco-friendly touches such as solar heating to the building and repairing damage including a rusty barn roof. Other famous faces who own property in Louisiana include Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Sandra Bullock. Scarlett and Ryan – who married in 2008 – recently put their four-bedroom Spanish style Los Angeles property up for sale for $4.5 million. The house – which the ‘Iron Man 2’ star paid $7 million for in 2007 – was built in 1931 and has been restored to its old style, as well as updated with eco-conscious upgrades such as solar electric. The home boasts five bathrooms, a pool and spa, chef’s kitchen with retro decor, a media room and gym room. This is not the first time Scarlett has faced a loss when selling a property. In April 2008, the ‘Lost In Translation’ actress sold her Manhattan loft apartment for $1.9 million – $52,000 less than she bought it for two years earlier.

Crystal Castles set album release date

Crystal Castles set album release date

Fusing low-res electronic noise and pop hooks so effortlessly that it can seem accidental, Crystal Castles began as producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath’s solo project in late 2003. Kath got the moniker from the name of She-Ra’s dwelling in the -He-Man and -Masters of the Universe cartoon series; it’s also the name of a 1983 !Atari video game, which is oddly appropriate, considering that one component of the band’s distinctive sound comes from a keyboard modified with an !Atari 5200 sound chip. When Kath collaborated with singer Alice Glass on some songs in spring 2005, Crystal Castles’ lineup was complete. One of the songs the pair recorded, “Alice Practice,” was something of an accident: it was intended to be a demo of Glass testing out a microphone, but its presence on /MySpace piqued record labels’ interest. “Alice Practice” was released as a limited-edition 7″ in summer 2006 on Merok Records, also home to Klaxons; its 500-copy run sold out in three days. The duo worked on their own songs and also honed their remixing skills, tweaking songs for Klaxons as well as GoodBooks, Uffie, Health, and Bloc Party. Tours with the Presets and Metric in 2007 set the stage for the release of Crystal Castles’ self-titled debut album, which Last Gang released early in 2008.  Crystal Castles set new album release date. Crystal Castles have revealed details of their new self-titled album. “Crystal Castles” is due for release on June 7th.  Crystal Castles have sold over 200,000 copies of their uncompromising, independently-released debut album, which NME included in their “50 Best Albums of the Decade”. The antisocial duo of Ethan Kath and Alice Glass have created an unexpected level of excitement and cult loyalty, clocking up a staggering 50 million plays on MySpace and Lastfm and headlining sold out tours around the world. Produced by Ethan Kath, tracks were recorded and written in contrasting environments around the world, including a church in Iceland, a self-built cabin in Ontario, and a garage behind an abandoned convenience store in Detroit. The new LP will be preceded by a limited 12″ vinyl release of “Doe Deer” on Record Store Day, followed by the single “Celestica”.

Magnet Media Launches We All Make Music

Anton Newcombe

The Zoom In Online network is proud to announce the launch of WeAllMakeMusic.com, a website dedicated to providing musicians with information and content that will help them thrive in today’s uncertain music business. With the world’s biggest record label, EMI, nearly $2.4 billion in debt, and its three chief competitors, Sony, WMG, and Vivendi/Universal, all losing money, the record business is in the midst of a paradigmatic shift. Instead of one corporate entity handling every aspect of an artist’s career, from artist development to album distribution, new companies are springing up every day offering these individual services to musicians, creating both opportunity and confusion.

We All Make Music will cater not only to the 240,000 professional musicians living in the United States, but also to the 65 million amateur ones trying to succeed on their own terms in the new millennium, delivering insights and information about how the music business is changing, and how to navigate those changes. The site’s content will be produced by a staff with a wide variety of perspectives: musicians, music magazine journalists, publicists, artist managers, venue owners and promoters. The site will feature do-it-yourself music making tips, stories of success from globally recognized artists and insiders, resources, research and news at the pulse of the music industry.
“Music making has changed so dramatically in the new millennium,” said Mike Raffensperger, the site’s Managing Editor. “If you wanted to record a professional album ten years ago, it would require a room full of expensive equipment and highly trained engineers. Today you can achieve the same recording quality on a laptop bought from a retail store. The chance of being heard all over the world used to require the attention and support of a major record label and radio broadcasting companies. Today, you can reach the world stage on P2P networks, MySpace and Internet Radio selling your music directly through online retailers like iTunes. There has never been a better time in history to be a musician and we are excited to watch, and hopefully help, as the industry evolves.”
We All Make Music is part of the Zoom In Online network, a production of Magnet Media, a company uniquely equipped to serve the evolving needs of today’s musicians. Magnet Media is a longstanding member of the music community, serving as an official ASCAP new media provider and creating the first external community site for Logic 8, Apple’s leading software suite for musicians. Additionally, the company’s acclaimed web video series, Rehearsal Space, explores the art and craft of music making through interviews with emerging artists and established icons like T-Pain, Erykah Badu, Ratatat, Kaki King, Anton Newcombe, We Are Scientists, One Republic, the Airborne Toxic Event, and Black Kids.

Justin Bieber would date a fan.  The 16-year-old star – who is currently in the UK promoting ‘Baby’ the second single from his debut album ‘My World’ – admitted he would go out with one of his female admirers, but they’d have to make him laugh first. In a live MySpace chat, which can be seen at www.myspace.com/myspacetoday, he said: “It’s whatever the situation is, if it happens, it happens. I think that I’m not going to limit myself. “I look for a girl that can make me laugh, I like a girl that has a nice smile and nice eyes.’ The Canadian singer has had three girlfriends in his life but admits none of them have been ‘The One’. He said: “I haven’t been in love, not yet.’ The teen sensation also revealed 28-year-old singer Beyonce Knowles is his ideal woman because she is “super hot

MySpace User’s Data Up For Sale On Web

MySpace User's Data Up For Sale On Web

MySpace is offering its users’ data to third parties who resell the content. The move by the company once regarded as the largest social networking phenomenon is a scenario privacy advocates have always feared. The data being sold includes any activity or information that is attached to a user’s account. Experts say that includes blog posts, location, photos, reviews, and status updates-among others. There is an untold amount of data and tracking that web analytics can provide about users and their online behavior for marketing purposes. MySpace, which has lost its dominance of the market share in recent years to rival Facebook, has contracted to have users’ data sold by a company called Infochimps for as little as $30. The openly advertised service gives industry insiders a glimpse at how eager the company is to raise cash and how eager some firms are to learn as much about you as possible. Infochimps, which has a revenue-sharing agreement with MySpace, is offering developers a pre-packaged version of MySpace’s Real Time Stream Feed as a value-added service. “Turning to selling off of data streams sounds like desperation to me,” Matthew Humphries wrote on geek.com. In a statement on Humphries’ post, MySpace defended its action, saying, “We have identified the need for third-party developers who can’t handle the size of our full feed to still have access to the data in a different format.” Infochimps, an Austin, TX start up, states on its website that the service is ”an open catalog and marketplace for the world’s data. You can share, sell, curate, and download data about anything and everything.”  The revelation is a reminder that users of such social networking sites should read the site’s privacy agreement and realize that the data and information users submit belong to the site. In 2005 News Corporation purchased MySpace for $580 million
