The ‘Vlad the Impaler’ band’s fourth album ‘ titled ‘Velociraptor!’ – moves their sound further forward and they’re glad the initial reaction to new tracks, debuted at the Isle of Wight festival on Sunday (12.06.11), has been positive.
Singer Tom Meighan told Absolute Radio: “The overall response from the gigs and people that have heard it on the radio has been bigger than ever. Everyone seems to be really digging the new sound.”
“It’s a huge progression for us, it’s epic. It’s a proper rock album, futuristic modern rock album. It’s the future.”
Guitarist Serge Pizzorno added: “It’s the best album we’ve done yet.”
The rockers have played at the Isle of Wight festival ‘ held on an island just off the south coast of the UK, which is only accessible by boat ‘ before, and found the journey across can be fraught with danger.
Tom explained: “This year we came on a yacht, well we say a yacht, it was sold to us as a yacht and it was more like a caravan.
‘We’ve done the Isle of Wight once before – last time we came on a speedboat. There was an injury but luckily it wasn’t any of us.
“Some random guy found his way on and it served him right because he dislocated his shoulder and broke his wrist in two places. We have no idea who he was. No-one knows. That’s the legend of the Isle of Wight.”
The English indie group’s label have confirmed they have completed recording and now putting the finishing touches to the disc, set for release in October.
A source at the band’s record company, Sony/BMG, said: “They’re still working on it, although it’s nearly finished. They’re mixing it. It’s all secret – I can’t even give you a clue about what it sounds like because we haven’t heard it.”
Kasabian are thought to have worked with producer Dan The Automator, who oversaw their last record, ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’, and recorded in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The ‘Fire’ hitmakers have talked about a number of different influences on the album, including grunge and punk, but said they will retain the psychedelic and electronic elements which have always been part of their sound.
Guitarist and main songwriter Serge Pizzorno recently described the record, saying: “Well, it’s epic. It’s big songs that make you feel like anything’s possible. It’s a really positive record. I suppose it’s a combination of all three records but we’ve just taken it a bit further.
“I’m really excited about it, because after the last record, people really liked it and wanted to know what was next, and I’m happy to say that it’s got better. I’m excited about playing it live – there are tunes on there that are going to take people to a new place.”

R.E.M. reveal new album name. Best-selling rock band R.E.M. have revealed that the title of their 15th studio album will be Collapse Into Now. The album will be released in Spring 2011 by Warner Bros. Records. BBC Radio 6 broke the news on its Twitter feed after R.E.M.’s manager Bertis Downs revealed the title at the In the City conference. R.E.M., which is singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist Mike Mills, re-teamed with Grammy Award-winning producer Jacknife Lee, who produced the band’s acclaimed previous album Accelerate, to make Collapse Into Now. Lee is also noted for his work on albums by U2, Snow Patrol, The Hives, and indie stalwarts Kasabian, Editors, Aqualung, and Bloc Party. R.E.M. and Lee recorded the album in New Orleans at the Music Shed and in Berlin at the famed Hansa Studios, where several legendary albums, including David Bowie’s Heroes, U2′s Achtung Baby, and Iggy Pop’s Lust for Life, were made. Additional recording and mixing were done at the venerable Blackbird Studio in Nashville. Collapse Into Now is the follow-up to 2008′s hard-charging Accelerate, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart, topped the Alternative, Rock, Digital, and Internet (physical goods) charts in the U.S., and debuted at No. 1 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. It spawned three hit singles ‘Supernatural Superserious,’ ‘Hollow Man,’ and ‘Man-Sized Wreath.’ The band also released a two-CD live set, entitled R.E.M. Live At The Olympia, last October. On October 26th, 2010, New West Records will release R.E.M. Live From Austin, TX – a DVD that contains the full live performance of the band’s concert for PBS’ Austin City Limits television series, plus three songs that didn’t air on the original broadcast. The 17 songs, including several from Accelerate and such classic hits as ‘Losing My Religion’ and ‘Man On The Moon,’ have been re-mixed and re-mastered in LPCM stereo and DTS-HD 5.1 Surround Sound.
Noel Fielding pits Bryan Ferry against Jelly Fox. Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh opened an art exhibition in London on the weekend, with part of it dedicated to Roxy Music front man and solo artist, Bryan Ferry. The entire exhibit is called Bryan Ferry vs. The Jelly Fox, with part of it being the ‘Church of Ferry’, which is entirely devoted to drawings of Bryan Ferry. ”m a bit like a mental patient, I just draw everything anyway, so I’ve always got loads of stuff kicking around and I can’t keep it all,’ Fielding told our source. He added that he usually keeps his drawings under his bed. Also featured is an installation created by Fielding with music from Sergio Pizzorno of Kasabian and some paintings by Mike Fielding, who plays Naboo in The Mighty Boosh. ‘Bryan Ferry vs. The Jelly Fox’ runs until January 5 at the Maison Bertaux – London’s oldest cake shop.
Doves and Editors join Oxegen. With the countdown to OXEGEN well and thoroughly under way, we thought we’d help ramp up the excitement levels even further with the addition of 13 more sensational acts! Indie and Rock are to the fore in today’s announcement and Bell X1 are without doubt one of the most important bands to emerge from Ireland over the last couple of decades. They’ve notched up four critically acclaimed albums and have enjoyed phenomenal success both in the UK and in the USA. Doves have achieved worldwide record sales of over two million amid universal critical acclaim, with two number one albums and two Mercury nominations. Back at OXEGEN after a great performance on the second stage last year, Doves are touring their ‘Best Of’ collection The Places Between. Debut album The Back Room established Editors as one of the UK’s best bands. Their follow-up An End Has A Start went to number 1 and earned the band a Brit Award nomination for Best Band. Their brand of dark indie rock reached new heights on In This Light and on This Evening. Two years ago, Scouting For Girls stole our hearts with a clutch of contagious hits (She’s So Lovely, Heartbeat, It’s Not About You, Elvis Ain’t Dead). New single This Ain’t A Love Song builds on that success and is taken from the new LP Everybody Wants To Be On TV. Ocean Colour Scene will be celebrating their 21st anniversary next year and have clocked up an impressive eleven Top 20 singles and five Top 10 albums during their illustrious career. Always a big hit with Irish fans, it’s great to have them back at OXEGEN. Kate Nash’s intelligent and insanely catchy single Foundations reached number two in the singles charts and helped propel her first album to No.1. New release ‘My Best Friend Is You’ has already been met with much critical acclaim. Expect her to be a name on everyone’s lips by the time she returns to Punchestown. Led by iconic frontman Ian McCulloch, Echo And The Bunnymen have been enthralling fans for three decades. Their last album, ‘The Fountain’, was released in 2009 and confirmed their genius hasn’t diminished in the slightest with new track Think I Do ranking alongside classics Nothing Lasts Forever and Killing Moon. Joshua Radin captured the public imagination when his songs were included on a string of hit US TV shows. Those who caught his recent show at Dublin’s Academy will know that this is an artist in the tradition of greats like Nick Drake and Elliott Smith –confessional folk-pop craftsmen who could say more with a whisper than most can with a scream. Also added to the OXEGEN bill are Manchester four-piece The Courteeners, hard rocking rebels Airbourne and their Australian compatriots The Middle East – one of the most talked about bands at SXSW this year. Two of our most popular Irish acts complete today’s announcement. Meteor Music Award winning Dublin act The Coronas put in a storming set when they played the Main Stage at OXEGEN on the Friday last year and also sold out three dates at The Academy in January. 2009 saw Republic of Loose play the US for three sold out tours. They returned to Ireland for OXEGEN and to open up for U2 at Croke Park on their 360 tour. In December, the band were nominated in Q Magazine’s ‘Albums of the Century’. OXEGEN returns to Punchestown from 9th-11th July (subject to licence). The Ticket Deposit Scheme is available again this year, so €120 deposit will secure your ticket, with the remaining balance payable by 31st May 2010. Paolo Nutini is announced as the fifth headliner at this summer’s Eden Sessions. The soulful singer-songwriter will play the Eden stage on Tuesday July 13, joining Jack Johnson (June 26 – sold out), Mika (June 27), Doves and Mumford & Sons (July 2 – sold out) and Calvin Harris and Audio Bullys (July 3) on a blockbuster bill. Paolo launched his career with 2006 quadruple-platinum debut These Streets, including the top-ten single Last Request. He followed it up with last year’s second long-player Sunny Side Up. That album went straight to number one in the UK album charts and returned to the top on two separate occasions. Hailing from Paisley in Scotland, Paolo has been singing and working in the music industry since leaving school at 16, including stints as a roadie and studio engineer. As a result, he has shown an understanding of live performance that belies his age and Atlantic Records recognised his potential early on and signed him just after his 18th birthday in 2005. Paolo was nominated in two categories in this year’s BRITs – British Male Solo Artist and British Album for Sunny Side Up – and has rubbed shoulders will rock royalty, supporting Led Zeppelin at their O2 comeback show and sharing a stage with the Rolling Stones at the Isle of Wight Festival in 2007. Tjarko Wieringa, Eden Sessions Creative Director, said: “We’re proud to announce Paolo’s appearance at this year’s Eden Sessions – another fantastic coup! His laid-back brand of motown-tinged folk rock will be a perfect match for Eden’s beautiful surroundings. “With five announcements behind us, this year’s Sessions are promising to be our best yet. We have some of best, most high-profile artists in the world already on the bill and there will be more exciting announcements to come.” The Sessions are famed not only for bringing top acts to Cornwall but also for their festival feel, with extra bands and entertainers playing around the site in the run-up to the main event. Massage and alternative therapies will also be showcased around Eden on the day of each Session. The 2010 Sessions will be the ninth season of summer gigs at the Eden Project. Performers in previous years include Oasis, Kasabian, Florence and the Machine, Vampire Weekend, Paul Weller, Hot Chip, Muse, Editors, Snow Patrol, Basement Jaxx, Amy Winehouse, Moby, PJ Harvey and The Verve.
