Joe Brooks, the internet sensation, announces third world tour

Joe Brooks, the internet sensation, announces third world tour. Joe Brooks, the online sensation who sold out his first two UK tours as an unsigned artist, is set to embark on a third run of dates, beginning November 19th. Now signed, Brooks’ London date has already sold out but a brand new date has just been added at Newcastle’s O2 Academy2 on November 29th. Previously the #1 artist on the MySpace UK (unsigned) Chart for nearly one year, Joe released his major label debut album in the UK last month thru iTunes on Island Records. The development story continues for the 23 year-old Southampton native, who built up a staggering fan base from his bedroom, without the help of a record label or publisher. Now he has nearly 20 million plays on MySpace and his new video for his first single ‘Superman’ is exploding on YouTube, recently amassing 1 million views in 8 days. With his pitch-perfect voice, uplifting lyrics and youthful spirit, Joe has won over legions of fans despite not previously having an album commercially available. The response so far has been particularly gratifying for Brooks, who began playing guitar at 16 and writing songs soon after. Now his fans can finally get what they have been glamorizing for, a full-length album. But the recorded music is only part of the story. The charismatic Brooks, who Seventeen/Cosmo girl recently called ‘The Next John Mayer,’ ‘brings it’ live and fans have flocked to see him perform everywhere he has played. ‘Simply writing and singing songs that people love to listen to, gives me the greatest buzz ever,’ says Brooks. ‘ just can’t wait to meet my fans ‘ for me that is the most exciting thing there is as a musician.’

Florence and the Machine to release album and single on the same day. Florence + the Machine is set to release ‘Heavy In Your Arms’ on November 15. The single is taken from Between Two Lungs, A two disc special edition of album Lungs to be released on the same day. To round off yet another exceptional year, Florence will be releasing the mighty single ‘Heavy In Your Arms’ on November 15th through Island Records. Produced by Paul Epworth the track, a favourite of recent festival headlining live sets, was recorded for the Twilight Eclipse film. Florence comments, ‘Heavy In Your Arms I suppose is about the weight of love, and how sometimes it can be a burden between two people. I felt a strong theme in the Twilight series was someone being rescued or being condemned, and is the love you carry bringing you down. I recorded it with Paul one evening, using a lot of strange reversed vocal samples and big hip hop piano. It’s basically inspired by 90′s hip hop, and gospel choirs, like most of my songs.’ ‘Heavy In your Arms’ will also be available on Between Two Lungs. A two disc special edition version of her 4 x platinum selling Brit Award winning debut album Lungs. Between Two Lungs will feature new cover art, sleeve notes by Florence and exclusive images. A 10 track second disc which, as well as ‘Heavy In Your Arms’, also includes among others, a live recording of brand new song ‘Strangeness & Charm’. The massive collaboration with Dizzee Rascal ‘You Got The Dirtee Love’ and a previously unreleased Yeasayer remix of ‘Dog Days Are Over’ and will also be available on November 15. Florence recently wowed worldwide audiences with her live performance (and victory) at this year’s MTV VMA Awards which saw her album explode in the U.S. Firing up to #2 in the I tunes chart and breaking the top #15 in the Billboard album chart. Annie Lennox moves to Universal Music

Annie Lennox moves to Universal Music. The departure from Sony is a big deal for Lennox. Everyone of her solo and Eurythmics albums are available through Sony. The first Lennox Universal album will be the Christmas record ‘A Christmas Cornucopia’ in November. The album will feature Annie’s unique take on her favourite Christmas carols plus a new song ‘Universal Child’.  “I’m absolutely delighted to be working with Island Records on my upcoming recording,” stated Ms. Lennox. “This album is something I’ve wanted to do for many years. It’s a true labour of love, and I feel very fortunate to be in partnership with such a cutting edge team, especially when I’m at a stage in my creativity when I want to diversify, and pursue my passion in my own individual way. I’ve never been part of a ‘mold,’ and Island are really supportive and appreciative of where I’m coming from. I want to make timeless music that people will love in many years to come…and I’d like to think that ‘A Christmas Cornucopia’ is going to be of those recordings.” “There are precious few artists who redefine the boundaries of popular music like Annie,” said Lucian Grainge, Co-Chief Executive Officer of Universal Music Group. “And we are delighted to be part of the next exciting chapter in her already storied career.” “Annie Lennox is one of world’s greatest singers,” commented Ms. Lennox’s manager Simon Fuller. “She has sold tens of millions of albums, celebrated countless hit singles and won every major award and honour there is to receive. However there is one thing she has always wanted to do and now it’s about to happen. Annie has always wanted to record an album of Christmas songs and to see this finally come to fruition is very special. Annie and I are thrilled to now be working with Island Records and all my friends at Universal around the world. We are looking forward very much to a long, happy and successful partnership for many years to come.” “The album Annie has recorded is timeless and inspiring, a very special showcase for her extraordinary voice,” added Universal Music UK chairman David Joseph. “This record is just the start of what feels like a natural, and very exciting, new partnership between Annie and Island Records.”

The Drums to play Heaven

The Drums to play Heaven

Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham met at summer camp when they were children and have been best friends ever since. Soon after their initial meeting, they formed Goat Explosion and toured extensively in North America during their teenage years. Around 2003, Jonathan and Adam Kessler formed Elkland. In the meantime, Jacob formed a band called HORSE SHOES (Shelflife Records). Jonathan ultimately decided to take a few years off from writing music after becoming disillusioned with the music business and parted ways with Elkland in 2005.

Jacob and Jonathan started a band. The Drums were formed in late 2008

Relocating to New York, The Drums added former Elkland guitarist Adam Kessler on second guitar and NYC born drummer Connor Hanwick (formerly of lo-fi teen pop duo Cape Of No Hope) to the line up and set up a month long residency at a small club on the lower east side of Manhattan.

Tommy Sparks releases ‘She’s Got Me Dancing’

tommy-sparks2Hot on the heels of Tommy Sparks’ killer debut single ‘I’m A Rope’ comes his out of the box smash hit ‘She’s Got Me Dancing’. Like Chic jamming with MGMT and Franz Ferdinand the forthcoming single is a brazen dancefloor assault, crammed with memorable hooks, bucketloads of fizzy energy and Tommy’s uniquely modern twist on classic new wave stylings.  The video, directed by Eric Wareheim, is 3 minutes and 14 seconds of technicolour comedy genius. Wareheim is one half of the cult American comedian duo Tim & Eric, and Tommy – a huge fan – personally called him to request his creative magic. Their current TV show ‘Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job’ features guest appearances by Johnny Depp, John C Reily, Jeff Goldblum, John Mayer, Weird Al Yankovic, The Saturday Night Live Crew, Elisha Cuthbert… the list goes on and on. Eric very rarely directs videos but he recently helmed fellow fans’ MGMT’s first video ‘The Youth’.
Tommy Sparks’ debut album (produced by Mike Crossey: Razorlight, Arctic Monkeys and Foals) is out May 25th on Island Records.

Scott Matthews to release second album ‘Elsewhere’

scott-matthewsBlazing a trail for the Black Country’s music scene, Wolverhampton wonder-boy Scott Matthews provided us with a truly spell-binding session.  Scott Matthews is a music fan. Raised on a stout diet of classics: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, he tried his hand at the punk-funk route (for a while he says he thought he was Red Hot Chili Peppers’ guitarist John Frusciante), as well as soul and indie. A few years ago he turned to solo singer/songwriting and found his groove.  His creative incarnation may have changed, but Matthews still looks to the inventive, classic songwriters for his inspiration, namechecking Ryan Adams, Badly Drawn Boy, Beck and Tom Waits as his current favourites.  All these artists point to the kind of things to expect from Scott, although it’s probably Jeff Buckley to whom he’s been most compared, in part because of his fragile yet powerful falsetto vocals, but also for his musicality and rich, atmospheric songs.   Matthews is fond of experimenting with soundscapes and instrumentation, and for his debut record, Passing Stranger, used legendary tabla player Sukvinder Singh Namdhari, (who has played with Ry Cooder and Ravi Shankar) along with guitars and strings to add texture.  In front of about 100 reverent fans, Scott and his band played his famous haunting single Elusive, along with Dream Song and Passing Stranger to a hushed, captive audience. Proving he’s not let stardom go to his head, Scott spent some time after the session was over, chatting to the fans and signing autographs outside. You can also watch an exclusive behind the scenes feature filmed on the day
scott-matthews2Scott Matthews will release his second album ‘Elsewhere’ on May 18th ’09 on the San Remo label through Island Records. Featuring 11 new Scott Matthews compositions it is produced by Scott and Gavin Monaghan (Mercury Rev, The Smiths, Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello). Scott is joined on the album by his regular touring group Danny Keane (cello), Craig Johnson (bass) and Sam Martin (drums) while a string section was drafted in for gorgeous album opener ‘Underlying Lies’ and a horn section for cast iron heartbreaker ‘Suddenly You Figure Out’, while Scott’s brother Darren plays piano on three songs including the first single ‘Fractured’, an atmospheric minor key rocker, which is about needing to help someone once in a while. Check out the video here. The song ’12 Harps’ features vocal contributions from fellow Wolverhamptonian Robert Plant.  Says Scott: ”Elsewhere’ comes from the feelings and emotions that so often dictate my state of mind. It captures my thoughts, frustrations and memories and I also look back on a difficult time emotionally, where the music reveals its healing properties. Hopefully you’ll see ‘Elsewhere’ as a place you can go visit once in a while to get lost in that moment and forget anything you feel needs to be forgotten.’

The full tracklisting for ‘Elsewhere’ is:

1. Underlying Lies
2. Jagged Melody
3. Suddenly You Figure Out

His singles ‘Elusive’ (for which Scott bagged an Ivor Novello Award for best song), ‘Dream Song’ and title track ‘Passing Stranger’ were on high rotation on the radio through ’07 and the album went on to sell over 80,000 copies. He spent a lot of ’06/’07/’08 on the road, highlights being a special guest at a Foo Fighters secret show, a support slot with one of his heroes Bert Jansch, a UK tour with Rufus Wainwright and supporting Robert Plant & Alison Krauss on the UK leg of their ‘Raising Sand’ world tour.
