Harry Potter to Top Twilight in Advance Sales

potterposterHarry Potter fans appear to be eagerly anticipating the release of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” More than 1,000 showtimes are sold out from San Francisco to New York, starting with its mid-night showing, Tuesday (July 14).  In fact it could surpass vampire hit “Twilight” as the third fastest sellout in the history of online ticketer Fandango.  There’s a strong showing of “Twilight” fans among advance ticketholders. Almost half of those polled, (42 percent) say they are also ardent fans of the vampire saga, which features Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.  The New Harry Potter movie, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint has already blown past “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” “Iron Man” and the HBO-based “Sex and the City” movie at the same point in the sales cycle, says Fandango.  The top-selling ticket is “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” followed by the latest in the batman series, “The Dark Knight.” They occupy the No. 1 and No 2 spots, respectively. “Harry is tracking to match last year’s juggernaut, ‘The Dark Knight,’ in advance ticket sales,” says Rick Butler, Chief Operating Officer of Fandango, which sells tickets to more than 16,000 screens and can be purchased through TheImproper.com’s film page.  “Showtimes are selling out at a very fast pace, and it’s clear that the film’s wider blockbuster appeal, solid word-of-mouth and positive Internet buzz on Half-Blood Prince are helping fuel the demand,” he added.  Theater owners are scrambling to add additional showtimes throughout the witching hours on Wednesday morning. Of those who are buying tickets, 63 percent are female and 62 percent who plan to see it at midnight will go with a group, according to a Fandango survey of more than 3,000 prospective moviegoers.  The latest Harry Potter release is likely to make it the most successful franchise in Hollywood history. To date, it has grossed $4.5 billion, or an average of $897 million, at the box office. The franchise is just behind the much longer running James Bond series, but should overtake Agent 007 once Half-Blood Prince debuts. These days the box office is only one piece of the pie. DVD sales account for $2.7 billion in sales, the equivalent of more than 211 million units, although a slump in the DVD market may hurt the latest film’s performance. More than $1 billion in video games, amounting to more than 40 million units have been sold while Warner Bros also makes hundreds of millions of dollars from merchandise and other sales such as downloads on iTunes. After the DVD is released later this year of the Half-Blood Prince, it will be followed by a Lego video game based on Harry, Ron and Hermione’s first four years at Hogwarts, due in 2010, while a theme park The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, is due to open in Orlando, Florida in spring 2010.  As daunting as the Potter juggernaut is, it still trails George Lucas’s Star Wars franchise, which has generated more than $20 billion thanks to steady stream of toys, video games and other spin-offs.

Destine will return to the US to record with James Paul Wisner again

destine1Destine now broadcasted  on RTV Channel as you can hear and see  Destine obviously has a sound which relates to bands like Fall Out Boy, Paramore en Simple Plan. With such a distinctive American sound and appearance and a Sony Music record deal under its belt, it seems like only a matter of time before Destine becomes an established name in Europe.  The five youngsters join forces in 2006 and release the A Dozen Dreams EP. After this, a time of intensive touring follows: in the first year 70 shows are played in the Netherlands, England, Wales, Germany, France and Belgium. Also, Destine shares the stage with bands like New Found Glory and Fall Out Boy. The large amount of shows rapidly results in a steady fan base and several songs get airplay on national radio and TV. Also, the song Last Scene of a Plane Crash gets featured as a leader tune on TV-station Comedy Central.  In December 2008 Destine signs with record label Sony Music and travels to Orlando, Florida to record with producer James Paul Wisner, who worked with bands like Paramore and New Found Glory. He is impressed by the songs and is convinced that the band has the potential of achieving international success.  The first result of the collaboration, single In Your Arms enters Holland’s charts in the first week of release, and soon gets frequent airplay on several national radio stations. The single has been supported by a highly rewarded video, shot near San Francisco by director Marco de la Torre. In its first weeks, the video hits several YouTube-charts. The song also gets used for a commercial on Holland’s largest TV-station. Also, Destine scores a cover at Up Magazine. In September 2009 Destine will return to the US to record with James Paul Wisner again to record the debut album that is due to be released in January 2010 on Sony Music. This summer, Destine will tour frequently in the Netherlands and abroad. One of the highlights will be Lowlands Festival, one of Holland’s eminent outdoors.

TV pitchman Billy Mays found dead in Florida home

billymaysSpirited TV pitchman Billy Mays was found dead at his Tampa home earlier this morning, police said.  Mays, 50, lent his trademark booming voice to infomercials for products like OxiClean and Orange Glo.  His wife, Deborah Mays, found him at their home Sunday morning, the Associated Press reported. Tampa police said there were no signs of a break in or foul play.   An autopsy will be done by Monday afternoon to determine the cause of death.  “Although Billy lived a public life, we don’t anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days,” Deborah Mays said in a statement. “Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times.”  Mays, who got his start peddling products to passersby on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, has plugged Mighty Putty, the Ding King dent repair kit, and, most recently, the website ESPN360.com  “With every product you see me on TV with, I’ve turned down 100, 150 more,” Mays told the News earlier this month, while in New York for a look alike contest. “I’ve been on TV for 11 years, and all I have is my good name.”  “I compare myself to a big-league slugger, a quarterback, the doctor who delivers the baby,” he said. “I’m not an inventor, but I’ll take your product to the next level.”

Nip/Tuck: FX Series Cancelled But Not Ending Soon

niptuckcastAt today’s Television Critics Association presentation in Beverly Hills, FX’s president surprised many by announcing that the popular Nip/Tuck series had been cancelled. On the positive side, there are still quite a few new episodes on the way.  Nip/Tuck premiered back on July 22, 2003 and tells the story of two plastic surgeons, Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) and Christian Troy (Julian McMahon). The series mixes drama with satire and irreverent humor as the doctors take on often strange cases. Nip/Tuck was initially set in Miami, Florida but the characters moved to Los Angeles at the start of the current season, the show’s fifth. The series was recently praised by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for its ongoing use of homosexual characters.  Today, FX president/GM John Landgraf told reporters that the network had ordered 19 episodes for the drama’s sixth, and final, season. That order’s a few less than a traditional TV season but it will bring the series’ installment total to 100 episodes. Series creator Ryan Murphy will stay on board until the end as the showrunner.  When asked about the cancellation, Landgraf noted that he felt it was time and doubted that any FX show would surpass 100 episodes. He said, “If you tried to do 150 episodes of The Sopranos, you would begin to diminish the quality of those shows. The David Chases (The Sopranos) and Shawn Ryans (The Shield), they’re taking on social commentary and grand sweeping questions. If we want to go after that brass ring, we have to accept they have limited shelf life.”   Though the move may be a disappointment to devoted fans of the plastic surgeon series, casual fans won’t realize the show has been axed for some time. There are actually 27 new episodes yet to come. Only 14 episodes of the fifth season have aired thus far with the remaining eight scheduled to begin airing in January. The sixth season is expected to begin running in 2010 and not finish airing until early 2011. Stay tuned!
