The ‘Dog Days Are Over’ group have been writing their second album since autumn last year, and guitarist Rob Ackroyd said the group are now poised to enter the famous Abbey Road studio in London where The Beatles recorded much of their material. He said: “Work on the second album has begun with producer Paul Epworth and there is talk of booking out Abbey Road for a month in April or May to record. Which is nice.”

The musician also revealed that while he and group leader Florence Welch see eye to eye on most musical genres, but finds himself at odds when it comes to her taste in mainstream songs.

He added to Gibson.com: “Florence’s and my taste in music often overlap in harmonious fashion; we’re both big fans of hip-hop and American indie.

“But she’s also a big fan of unadulterated pop music, which cuts through me like a knife.”

The guitarist – who has also recently been working with Pixie Geldof, daughter of former Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof on her new band Violet – also told how he had managed to meet his rock guitar hero through playing with the machine.

He added: “I think people like Guns n’ Roses guitarists Izzy Stradlin and Slash really glamorised the guitar for me when I was a kid. In the early ’90s it seemed like every weekend was Guns N’ Roses weekend on MTV and I was galvanized by Slash.

“I kind of fulfilled my dream of meeting Slash last summer when Florence And The Machine shared a festival bill with him.”

The Vaccines, James Blake and Jessie J up for BRITs Critics’ Choice Award. The countdown to the most exciting music awards ceremony in Britain continues today with the announcement of the three artists shortlisted for the prestigious BRITs Critics’ Choice Award in association with War Child. The nominees are James Blake, Jessie J and The Vaccines. For the first time since the introduction of the Critics’ Choice Award the winner will be announced, alongside second and third place, on the same day as the official voting for the 2011 awards closes – 15th December. The Critics’ Choice Award is for new British acts that the critics tip for mainstream success in the forthcoming year. In previous years it has been awarded to Ellie Goulding (2010), Florence and the Machine (2009) and Adele (2008). The artists are chosen by a team of experts including the music editors of national newspapers, key music and lifestyle magazines and music websites plus the heads of music at major radio and music TV stations. The Award is open to artists signed to a label who are set to release their debut albums in 2011. Upon today’s announcement of the shortlist, in another first for 2011, the three nominated artists were immediately inducted into the BRITs Voting Academy and are now eligible themselves to vote for The BRIT Awards 2011, following this year’s inclusion of artists in the academy. For the second year running, the Critics’ Choice Award will also be presented in association with War Child, an international charity that protects children living in the world’s most dangerous war zones. The BRITs are working alongside the charity and the annual War Child gig, now in its third year, will subsequently be an official BRITs event held at London’s IndigO2 on the night of the 15th.  Today’s announcement coincides with the Official Voting Day for the 2011 Awards.  www.brits.co.uk

Paolo Nutini to headline Eden Sessions

Paolo Nutini to headline Eden Sessions

Paolo Nutini is announced as the fifth headliner at this summer’s Eden Sessions.  The soulful singer-songwriter will play the Eden stage on Tuesday July 13, joining Jack Johnson (June 26 – sold out), Mika (June 27), Doves and Mumford & Sons (July 2 – sold out) and Calvin Harris and Audio Bullys (July 3) on a blockbuster bill. Paolo launched his career with 2006 quadruple-platinum debut These Streets, including the top-ten single Last Request. He followed it up with last year’s second long-player Sunny Side Up. That album went straight to number one in the UK album charts and returned to the top on two separate occasions.  Hailing from Paisley in Scotland, Paolo has been singing and working in the music industry since leaving school at 16, including stints as a roadie and studio engineer. As a result, he has shown an understanding of live performance that belies his age and Atlantic Records recognised his potential early on and signed him just after his 18th birthday in 2005.    Paolo was nominated in two categories in this year’s BRITs – British Male Solo Artist and British Album for Sunny Side Up – and has rubbed shoulders will rock royalty, supporting Led Zeppelin at their O2 comeback show and sharing a stage with the Rolling Stones at the Isle of Wight Festival in 2007. Tjarko Wieringa, Eden Sessions Creative Director, said: “We’re proud to announce Paolo’s appearance at this year’s Eden Sessions – another fantastic coup! His laid-back brand of motown-tinged folk rock will be a perfect match for Eden’s beautiful surroundings. “With five announcements behind us, this year’s Sessions are promising to be our best yet. We have some of best, most high-profile artists in the world already on the bill and there will be more exciting announcements to come.” The Sessions are famed not only for bringing top acts to Cornwall but also for their festival feel, with extra bands and entertainers playing around the site in the run-up to the main event. Massage and alternative therapies will also be showcased around Eden on the day of each Session. The 2010 Sessions will be the ninth season of summer gigs at the Eden Project. Performers in previous years include Oasis, Kasabian, Florence and the Machine, Vampire Weekend, Paul Weller, Hot Chip, Muse, Editors, Snow Patrol, Basement Jaxx, Amy Winehouse, Moby, PJ Harvey and The Verve.

JLS and Robbie to clean up at the REAL Brits

JLS and Robbie to clean up at the REAL Brits.  UK Music lovers show who they really want to win Brit Awards ahead of tonight’s event.   JLS and Robbie Williams are the undisputed champions of the 2010 Brit awards – and the event hasn’t even happened yet. Music video streaming site MUZU.TV polled over 5,000 Britons all last week to find out which artists we most want to win. Despite critics claiming that this year’s awards will be dominated by the women, the public have voted otherwise. Every day last week, MUZU.TV put hot favourite Brit nominees up against each other, to battle it out for the public vote on its ‘Video Fight Club’. Fans voted for the artists they think deserve to win in each category. The results of the REAL Brits are:  · The most popular artist of the entire poll was international heart-throb Robbie Williams. The cheeky northerner gave Calvin Harris, Dizzy Rascal and Paulo Nutini a run for their money, winning a staggering 98% of votes for the British Male Solo award.
· X-Factor stars, JLS, have clearly also won the hearts of the nation – 77% of those polled voted for the boy band to win British Breakthrough Act.
· Diva Leona Lewis stole 97% of the votes to win the Best Female Solo Artist, leaving Pixie Lott and Bat for Lashes in the shade
· According to British music fans, Florence and the Machine should be taking home the Best Album gong. The flame haired crooner had 51% of the public’s vote, beating Dizzee Rascal and Lily Allen.
· 73% of us want Tinchy Stryder to walk away with Best Single for his track ‘Number One’, featuring N-Dubz. The pint sized urban music star, who’s monocle is ‘Star in the Hood’, stomped all over competition from Alexandra Burke, Alesha Dixon and Cheryl Cole
· Indie and rock fans around the country showed support for Kasabian, who won 62% of all votes to win Best Group.

The Brits will take place on Tonight 16 February at London’s Earls Court Arena commemorating 30 shows of the best in British music

Robbie Williams, Lady Gaga and Kasabian to perform at BRITs

Robbie Williams, Lady Gaga and Kasabian to perform at BRITs. ’Angels’ singer Robbie – who has previously spoken of how his severe stage fright has halted his live performances – will perform a short set to commemorate recieiving a lifetime achievement award, with rumours rife that he will reunite with his former Take That bandmates for the second time since launching a solo career in 1996.  A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: ‘Take That could reunite with Robbie to perform his second track. It’s the band’s 20th anniversary year and they and they are in talks about doing something spectacular.’  Robbie previously joined Take That and a host of other stars onstage for a rendition of Beatles song ‘Hey Jude’ at a concert in aid of charity Children in Need in November last year.  Meanwhile, rap superstar Jay-Z is rumoured to be making an appearance at the show, and will possibly perform with ‘Viva La Vida’ hitmakers Coldplay, fronted by Chris Martin.  A source said: ‘As well as bringing Alicia Keys on stage to do a rendition of their hit ‘Empire State of Mind’, he’s thinking of getting Coldplay involved too. Chris Martin and Jay have been pals for years.’   Meanwhile, Lady Gaga will not be able to realise her plan of performing alongside reality TV sensation Susan Boyle at the awards show – as the latter has reportedly been snubbed from nominations because she is ‘not cool’ enough.   Susan– who rose to fame after appearing on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, one of media mogul Simon Cowell’s TV shows – is said to have missed out on a nod in any category, despite being the biggest selling female artist of 2009 in the UK.  A source said: ‘She’s not even shortlisted for Best Female, even though that’s usually the weakest category.  ‘And it’s not just an attack on Susan. It also shows how Simon Cowell is regarded by many in the record business.’  However, one collaboration which will definitely take place at the awards will be between Dizzee Rascal and Florence and the Machine in a specially conceived track called ‘You Got The Dirtee Love’, a mash up of their tracks ‘You Got The Love’ and ‘Dirtee Cash’.   ‘Beat Again’ hitmakers JLS have also been confirmed to sing at the ceremony, which takes place at London’s Earls Court on 16 February.  The nominations for the BRIT Awards will be announced tonight (18.01.10).
