Rock superstar Lenny Kravitz has performed at venues all over the globe but on Feb. 26 he’ll stand before more that 100,000 when he plays a pre-race concert before the Daytona 500.
Kravitz, a four-time Grammy Award winner, will perform the Daytona 500 Pre-Race Show, the pre-race extravaganza — shown by FOX — leading up to the start of “The Great American Race” at Daytona International Speedway.
“Lenny Kravitz is an iconic performer and multi-talented musician – he will deliver a rousing performance prior to the start of the 54th Daytona 500,” Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III said. “Race fans will experience a first-class, heart-pounding pre-race show that will serve as the perfect prelude to what will be an historic and thrilling afternoon of NASCAR racing on the high banks of Daytona.”
He has sold more than 35 million albums and is the only musician in history to win the Grammy for best male vocals in rock music four times consecutively.
The world-renown musician will perform three songs prior to the start of the 54th annual Daytona 500 – the season-opening event in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Kravitz’s ninth album, Black and White America, was released in 2011 and features a mixture of funk and hard rock hits like “Stand,” “Rock Star City Life” and his new single “Push.”
After a European tour, Kravitz recently kicked off his first American outing in five years in January. The 20-city tour will wrap up in Miami on Feb. 25.
Kravitz joins a long list of stars names that have performed in the Daytona 500 Pre-Race Show that includes Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey and Brad Paisley.
The ‘Maggie May’ hitmaker is expected to welcome his former Faces bandmate onto the stage at London’s Hyde Park towards the end of his headline set at Hard Rock Calling tomorrow to play some of their old hits.
A source told the Daily Star newspaper: “Rod’s back catalogue is huge but it will be a really special moment for his fans when Ronnie comes on.”
Meanwhile, last night’s headline band, The Killers have hinted they could debut some of their long-awaited new material alongside classic hits including’ Bones’, ‘When You Were Young’ and ‘Mr. Brightside’.
Speaking after their intimate warm-up show at London’s Scala earlier this week, drummer Ronnie Vannucci said: “Hard Rock Calling is a f***ing great show – I love that show. We’re having our cake and eating it too.
“These intimate gigs are sweaty, where everyone’s like five feet away and you can see the whites of their eyes. You really connect on a more immediate and personal level.
“But when you have 70,000 people, your gestures have to be bigger. It’s so important about being able to address a group, making a group feel as one.
“And that’s something that’s a learned thing, we’re still trying to get our heads around it. As for us playing new songs, we might have a surprise for you.”
Joining The Killers and Rod as headliners of this year’s Hard Rock Calling, Bon Jovi will top the bill tonight.
Richie Sambora is checking into rehab to regain his sobriety and for exhaustion. The Bon Jovi rocker has reportedly been drinking too much amid a busy year. The 52-year-old rocker helped his band earn more than $201 million in 2010 in tour shows. He also launched his clothing line White Trash Beautiful last year. But amid all his success, Sambora is said to have neglected himself.
“Richie recently has been drinking too much, and wants to get his life together,” a source told RadarOnline.com.
A close friend added that he “has had a busy year. I think this was a culmination of all the things that overloaded his life and finally he realized he needed to take care of himself.”
Bon Jovi is slated to play tour dates in the U.S. and in Europe in June. It is not clear how Sambora’s treatment will affect the band’s schedule.
This is not the first time Sambora has checked into rehab. He also sought treatment for alcoholism in 2007
Bon Jovi will take a two-year break when they finish their 2011 world tour. The New Jersey rockers – who were named the highest grossing touring act of 2010 – have revealed plans to go on hiatus after they play their last tour date in Lisbon, Portugal in July so fans will “appreciate” them more.
Drummer Tico Torres said: “Sometimes you need to get away so people can appreciate you better, and you also have to get away to live your life and create and recharge. So the best thing I can tell you is we’re gonna need a couple years off for sure.”
Guitarist Richie Sambora has, however, assured fans the break will not be permanent because the group – which also includes Jon Bon Jovi and David Bryan – want to continue touring for as long as possible like the Rolling Stones.
He said: “We do need a little bit of a break, but not that much of a break, because what’s going to happen is there’s more songs to be written and. Y’know, guess what? We want to be the Rolling Stones. I know I do.
“We’re just going out there and working our a***s off and enjoying it, actually being the best band of our lives. We’re not gonna quit. We’re gonna keep on going and writing new, great songs, go in the studio and make great records, evolve more and get back into stadiums and give people a great, great show.”
Although lead singer Jon has plans to make a solo record during the break, Richie is adamant it won’t affect the band reforming after their hiatus.
He told Rolling Stone magazine: “Everybody gets to be an individual. He’s the leader of this band and you’ve got to respect that. Who knows what the hell he’s gonna do, but it’s okay with all of us. We’re all gonna stick together. We’re like a gang.”
Bon Jovi, AC/DC, U2 Have 2010′s Highest Grossing Tours. Bon Jovi may have recently been snubbed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the veteran band still ended the year as the world’s top concert attraction, according to a trade publication. The group sold $201.1 million worth of tickets, split almost evenly between North America and the rest of the world, said Pollstar magazine. Its success was noteworthy given that it was promoting a 2009 album that did not sell strongly.Bon Jovi also shone even as overall sales slid in a tough economy. Pollstar said sales for the top 50 tours worldwide fell 12 percent to $2.93 billion. In North America, the top 50 tours dropped 15 percent to $1.69 billion. Overseas tours are increasingly becoming more lucrative for musicians, especially as infrastructure improves across Asia and the former Soviet bloc, Pollstar said. Indeed, hard rockers AC/DC came in at No. 2 and Irish foursome U2 at No. 3 after making all their money overseas. AC/DC grossed $177 million, and U2 $160.9 million. U2 was the top worldwide act in 2009 with $311 million, followed by AC/DC with $227 million. In a field dominated by rock acts, flamboyant pop star Lady Gaga was No. 4 this year with $133.6 million. The “Poker Face” singer worked harder than any other musician in the top 10, playing 138 shows, two-thirds of which were overseas. Bon Jovi, by contrast, played 80 shows. AC/DC (40 shows) and U2 (32 shows) took it relatively easy. Metallica was No. 5 with $110.1 million from 60 overseas shows. Both Metallica and AC/DC last released albums in 2008, relying on their extensive catalogs of headbanging favorites to keep drawing fans. The field was rounded out by Canadian singer Michael Buble (No. 6, $104.2 million), the “Walking with Dinosaurs” live family show (No. 7, $104.1 million), Paul McCartney (No. 8, $93 million), the Eagles (No. 9, $92.3 million) and former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters (No. 10, $89.5 million).
Bon Jovi tops Billboard’s top touring act for second time in three years. For the second time in three years, Bon Jovi have taken the crown on the Billboard year-end touring chart, quite an achievement for an act that has been together for over a quarter of a century. For the period of November 20, 2009 through November 28, 2010, the group grossed $146,507,388 with attendance of 1,591,154 and 69 sellouts. In 2008, the last time they ranked number one, they brought in $210,000,000 but it has been a bad year for promoters, so the lower total is to be expected. Jon Bon Jovi told Billboard “It’s funny, because there’s obviously a part of you that’s very proud of it. In the industry it means something; it doesn’t mean anything to the public. But in the industry, all your peers are going to look at it. They’re going to see some kind of year-end charts for everything: albums, singles, touring. It’s a very nice industry asterisk, for sure. U2 are paying attention.”Speaking of U2, they came in second on Billboard’s list followed by AC/DC making it a classic rock triple at the top of the chart. Veteran artists took seven of the top ten for 2010. Here is the top ten:
•1. Bon Jovi
•4. Lady Gaga
•5. Black Eyed Peas
•6. James Taylor & Carole King
•9. Dave Matthews Band
•10. Paul McCartney
