Bloc Party have been working on a new album and will head into the studio in September.
NME spoke to the UK indie sensation’s guitarist Russell Lissack, who has just wound up a stint touring with Brit-pop scamps Ash.
He said that he and frontman Kele Okereke have begun working on new stuff, separately and together.
‘We’re having a bit of a break until the festivals are over,’ he said, ‘because people have commitments during the summer, but we’re going to get back properly in September and sit in a rehearsal studio to work on new band material.’
The band have been on a live hiatus since 2009 and haven’t released an album since 2008′s third album Intimacy
R.E.M. reveal new album name. Best-selling rock band R.E.M. have revealed that the title of their 15th studio album will be Collapse Into Now. The album will be released in Spring 2011 by Warner Bros. Records. BBC Radio 6 broke the news on its Twitter feed after R.E.M.’s manager Bertis Downs revealed the title at the In the City conference. R.E.M., which is singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist Mike Mills, re-teamed with Grammy Award-winning producer Jacknife Lee, who produced the band’s acclaimed previous album Accelerate, to make Collapse Into Now. Lee is also noted for his work on albums by U2, Snow Patrol, The Hives, and indie stalwarts Kasabian, Editors, Aqualung, and Bloc Party. R.E.M. and Lee recorded the album in New Orleans at the Music Shed and in Berlin at the famed Hansa Studios, where several legendary albums, including David Bowie’s Heroes, U2′s Achtung Baby, and Iggy Pop’s Lust for Life, were made. Additional recording and mixing were done at the venerable Blackbird Studio in Nashville. Collapse Into Now is the follow-up to 2008′s hard-charging Accelerate, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart, topped the Alternative, Rock, Digital, and Internet (physical goods) charts in the U.S., and debuted at No. 1 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. It spawned three hit singles ‘Supernatural Superserious,’ ‘Hollow Man,’ and ‘Man-Sized Wreath.’ The band also released a two-CD live set, entitled R.E.M. Live At The Olympia, last October. On October 26th, 2010, New West Records will release R.E.M. Live From Austin, TX – a DVD that contains the full live performance of the band’s concert for PBS’ Austin City Limits television series, plus three songs that didn’t air on the original broadcast. The 17 songs, including several from Accelerate and such classic hits as ‘Losing My Religion’ and ‘Man On The Moon,’ have been re-mixed and re-mastered in LPCM stereo and DTS-HD 5.1 Surround Sound.

Operator Please release ‘Gloves’ Everyone’s favourite Australian baroque-pop ™ collective, Operator Please, burst onto the music scene in early 2007 with their addictive ‘Song About Ping Pong’, and their infectious debut album Yes Yes Vindictive. Aged only 16 they toured the world wowing crowds with their incredible presence and energy in Australia, Europe and Japan and found themselves supporting the likes of Bloc Party, Futureheads, Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys. Now they are back, all grown up, and with a remarkably sophisticated sophomore album, titled Gloves. The band spent the last 12 months pouring their hearts into their work, self-producing the record at a farm near Australia’s Byron Bay, and in singer Amandah Wilkinson’s lounge on the Gold Coast, before mixing it in Los Angeles with long time No Doubt collaborator Jimmy Harry. ‘Gloves’ shows a fresh new direction for the band, a sound already turning heads as the first release, ‘Logic’, hits Australian and international airwaves. The reaction at home in Austrlaia was incredible, with national radio stations ripping and adding the track instantly after the band posted it on their myspace. Proving to be an instant hit there, ‘Logic’ – released in the UK last week digitally and limited edition 7′ on Brille Records – has also been picking up attention here from Radio 1, 6 Music, XFM, MTV, NME and all over the worldwide web. The album, ‘Gloves’ will be released in the UK on May 31st, preceded by the summery single ‘Back And Forth’ on May 24th. The album is already available for fans to pre-order via the bands website at www.operatorpleaseband.com along with exclusive goodies, including a limited edition cassette of bonus tracks.

Fusing low-res electronic noise and pop hooks so effortlessly that it can seem accidental, Crystal Castles began as producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath’s solo project in late 2003. Kath got the moniker from the name of She-Ra’s dwelling in the -He-Man and -Masters of the Universe cartoon series; it’s also the name of a 1983 !Atari video game, which is oddly appropriate, considering that one component of the band’s distinctive sound comes from a keyboard modified with an !Atari 5200 sound chip. When Kath collaborated with singer Alice Glass on some songs in spring 2005, Crystal Castles’ lineup was complete. One of the songs the pair recorded, “Alice Practice,” was something of an accident: it was intended to be a demo of Glass testing out a microphone, but its presence on /MySpace piqued record labels’ interest. “Alice Practice” was released as a limited-edition 7″ in summer 2006 on Merok Records, also home to Klaxons; its 500-copy run sold out in three days. The duo worked on their own songs and also honed their remixing skills, tweaking songs for Klaxons as well as GoodBooks, Uffie, Health, and Bloc Party. Tours with the Presets and Metric in 2007 set the stage for the release of Crystal Castles’ self-titled debut album, which Last Gang released early in 2008. Crystal Castles set new album release date. Crystal Castles have revealed details of their new self-titled album. “Crystal Castles” is due for release on June 7th. Crystal Castles have sold over 200,000 copies of their uncompromising, independently-released debut album, which NME included in their “50 Best Albums of the Decade”. The antisocial duo of Ethan Kath and Alice Glass have created an unexpected level of excitement and cult loyalty, clocking up a staggering 50 million plays on MySpace and Lastfm and headlining sold out tours around the world. Produced by Ethan Kath, tracks were recorded and written in contrasting environments around the world, including a church in Iceland, a self-built cabin in Ontario, and a garage behind an abandoned convenience store in Detroit. The new LP will be preceded by a limited 12″ vinyl release of “Doe Deer” on Record Store Day, followed by the single “Celestica”.

Pin Me Down is a musical collaboration between Bloc Party guitarist Russell Lissack and vocalist Milena Mepris (formerly of the electro-punk band Black Moustache). The pair met several years ago when Milena’s old band supported Bloc Party in New York. Having discovered a shared love of guitars and 80s artists such as Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper and New Order the pair decided to explore new frontiers together. Pin Me Down fuse energetic pop melodies with razor-sharp guitar sounds – creating ‘apocalyptic pop’ as Mépris likes to call it. Pin Me Down follow-up their free download single of last month (Time Crisis) with a brand new single (Treasure Hunter) and debut album, both released on Monday 19 April. The new single will be available on limited edition 7′ and Download. The eponymously titled debut album was recorded by Alex Elena and Daniel Lingren in London and New York throughout the course of 2009.
The album’s track listing is as follows;
Boy Who Cried Wolf
Oh My Goddess
Pretty In Pink
Meet The Selkirks
Everything Is Sacred
The album is available to pre-order now exclusively from the band’s website as a digital album, CD and deluxe edition including bonus vinyl, t-shirt, badges and tote bag,
The band will be touring in the summer with club shows and festival dates (details to follow).
Today’s electronic dance culture is due for a melodic transcendence from the shadowy, industrial electro that has been hammering away at the scene. As dance floors begin to buckle under such weighty beats, the Belgium-based band aptly named Aeroplane is dedicated to elevating its fans toward a higher musical space undefined by standardized genres. They reach for freedom from constraints of predictability, weaving currents of psychedelic guitars, pop keys, disco beats, catchy bass lines and melancholic waves into a singular connection of modern beat-driven music.
At the controls of Aeroplane are Stephen Fasano and Vito Deluca, a duo whose combined experience gives life and emotion to the music. Vito brings with him a producer background that pulsates the hands and heart of Aeroplane, and Stephen’s DJ roots vibrate the eyes and soul. Their unique collaboration of sound and purpose is channelling appreciation from among the biggest DJs and producers around, and the 2007 release of their first 12” entitled “Caramellas/Aeroplane” (Eskimo Recordings) has generated a jet stream of increasing momentum. Subsequent releases have kept their ring tones looping with remix requests from artists like Cobra Dukes, Das Pop, Lindström, Cut Copy, Grace Jones, MGMT, Bloc Party, and Friendly Fires. Projects like these reinforce the integration of electronic music into the omnipresent indie scene. Blends of Cosmic Nu Disco, Psychedelic, Balearic, Emo, etc. are forming a new era of musical hybrids, and explorations are officially under way. After all, machines are human too…
Tiësto and Nelly team up. When Nelly Furtado attended the Miami Winter Music Conference in 2008 with her producer Timbaland she was so blown away by Tiësto’s performance that she instantly agreed to record a track with him. To coincide with this release Tiësto will be bringing his Spectacular ‘Kaleidoscope’ tour to the UK, promising to be one of the most extravagant tours that the UK has ever seen. These shows are no-holds-barred, off the wall productions hosted by the world’s premiere electronic artist. In fact, they don’t exceed expectations so much as blow them wide open.
