Kelly Rowland Fuming About Sydney Flight. Kelly Rowland thinks the Australian airline Qantas’ crew members are “sh***.” The ex-Destiny’s Child singer claims she and her entourage were treated like children. The 29-year-old songstress was fuming when she walked through the domestic terminal following a flight from Melbourne to Sydney. She told Daily Telegraph that she found the “flight attendants really shi***. I don’t know why. You tell me.” “They were very rude to us. That’s the first time you’ll ever hear me say a curse word. They were just rude to us on the plane. They treated us like five-year-old kids.” She admitted that she didn’t know what sparked the incident, but it is believed that it was caused by some passengers who were using cell phones on board and by others who were sitting in the wrong seats. Rowland, who is Down Under for Thursday’s Supafest gig, had no problem with the airline before, saying it’s always been “fantastic” every time she flew Qantas, but that particular flight was “rather unpleasant.” Akon, Eve, and Sean Paul were also on the flight but they are reportedly not involved in the incident. A Qantas spokesperson told the paper that it was important all passengers followed the crew’s instructions.
Leading European music promotion consultancy MyMusicSuccess.Com announced a raft of new top tier promotion services this week, following their attendance at the Midem music conference in Cannes. The new “Chartbreaker” dance remix package forges a partnership between the music consultancy and the top US producer / remixer Mike Rizzo to remix tracks and target promotion towards a placement on the Billboard Club Play chart. Mike Rizzo recently toured the US and UK with Utada, and his remixes have gained over 30 number one Billboard chart positions to date for artist such as Britney Spears, Akon, Beyonce, and many more major label artists. MyMusicSuccess Cofounder Simon Adams says that it’s proving a great way to gain interest for UK and European acts in the vast US marketplace. “We recently took unknown Philadelphia singer songwriter Taylor Bright into a top 30 position, which ran for 11 weeks, that’s unheard for an unsigned, debut artist. Taylor was right in the middle of here chart run in the US when she started her recently acclaimed UK tour, and the remixes helped her win new fans on both sides of the Atlantic” For pop crossover artists looking to make an impact on American radio, MyMusicSuccess now also offers a route for UK and European artists looking to gain airplay on dance and Top 40 hit radio across the US. The Hot Radio Play services provide coverage on top nationally syndicated and regional rhythm radio shows, targeting the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay and Hot Dance Airplay charts.

More than 75 stars — from the legendary Barbra Streisand to rapper Lil Wayne and actor Vince Vaughn — gathered at Hollywood’s Henson Recording Studios on the day before yesterday (Feb. 1) to record the 25th anniversary version of “We Are The World.” Like its predecessor, “We Are The World – 25 For Haiti” features a diverse lineup: this time ranging from Streisand and Celine Dion to actor Jeff Bridges. But it also boasts a major hip-hop contingent (Kanye West, Lil Wayne, LL Cool J, Akon, Kid Cudi, Drake), young newcomers (Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber) and major-league high technology. “This is like running through hell with gasoline underwear,” said Quincy Jones with a laugh late last night during a five-minute recording break. The video for “We Are the World – 25 For Haiti” will world premiere in 3D during NBC’s coverage of the Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics on Friday, Feb. 12. Academy Award-winning writer/director Paul Haggis (“Crash,” “Million Dollar Baby”) directed the video, an online version will feature green screen, allowing viewers to place themselves in the We Are the World lineup as well. Proceeds from the contemporary recording and the accompanying video will go directly to Haitian relief efforts through the We Are The World Foundation, a newly created not-for-profit organization comprised of board members Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie, Wyclef Jean, Paul Haggis, AEG Live president/CEO Randy Phillips and Ambassador Louis Moreno of the Inter-American Development Bank. Helping to underwrite the project was Visa.
Joining Jones in the media tent (which housed two video screens showing both looped and real-time footage of the recording) was an equally tired but ebullient Lionel Richie, who produced and co-wrote the original song with Michael Jackson. He, Jones and Jean are executive producers of the new song, with newly minted Grammy Award winner/producer RedOne and producer/musical director Ricky Minor (“American Idol”) also onboard. Richie and Jones noted that other artists beyond those on hand last night will be added to the recording. Among those will be Janet Jackson, who will sing brother Michael’s middle part in the original. Asked the reason for going with all new artists for the re-recording, Richie said, “It’s the toughest thing; you want to jump in, but then you must realize you have to pass the torch.” Richie, who sang on the original version as well, passed his torch to newcomer Beiber, who sings Richie’s part in the new song. Asked what Michael Jackson would be doing if he were alive to participate in the re-recording, Richie said, “I know it’s hard to believe, but if Michael were alive, he would be behind the scenes with us doing exactly what we’re doing: supporting everyone. I must say, the enthusiasm I’ve witnessed in there…I’ve never seen anything like it. What made it so interesting this time around is we took longer to record because we now have cell phones and Twitter. Instead of having down time where everyone is sitting around doing nothing, everybody was taking pictures of each other.” The gathered artists also broke into an impromptu version of the Bill Withers classic “Lean on Me,” sparked by Melanie Fiona’s hurting feet. “We were standing for quite a while and my feet started to hurt a bit. So I told Musiq Soulchild that I was going to lean on him. He said this isn’t ‘Lean on Me.’ Then someone else said lean on me and Celine started singing. The rest is what you saw on camera, history.”
Also making their way to the media room to share their experiences were: Jordin Sparks: “I was standing next to Rob Thomas and Lil Wayne in front of me. Then Brandy, Tyrese and Natalie Cole. Everybody is having a good time, so excited to be a part of something bigger than us. I’ve always loved Michael’s love for the world. I love the song; they’ve changed it up a little bit. It has a little more — I hate this word — but swag, I guess. But it’s going to be awesome.” Natalie Cole: “It’s a bubbly, energetic mood in there. I was standing by Kanye West and Jennifer Hudson; we were all getting numbers and autographs. But we were also in a thoughtful mood in there because of the images of Haiti on the video screens behind us in the studio. It was also very emotional because a Haitian film crew — who had just got out in time — spoke to us as well.” Celine Dion: “People are very touched to be here. Wehave to enjoy ourselves; we’re talking about music and about someone who was living through music. Michael’s fashion was to help change the world through his lyrics. Through our music, voices and talent, all of us together…you can’t just say this is terrible. Tonight we have this opportunity to make a difference.” Josh Groban: “I got Kenny Rogers’ original harmony with Paul Simon and I was happy for that. But I don’t know yet who the harmony will be with; it’s to be determined. Then they had me do a riff at the end with some bravado…that was the token classical note of the song (laughs). It’s inspired chaos. We’re all there for the same reason and it’s great to see so many legendary artists sweating it out; doing it until it’s over. Everybody left their ego at the door. To be smack dab in the middle of a sandwich between Weezy and Barbra Streisand was personally a creative experience I don’t think I’ll have the pleasure of having again. It just goes to show the mix and match of people who are here to help. I can only hope this version has the impact of the original.” Lil Wayne: “I’ve never been involved in anything like this. But coming out I feel blessed and feel like I’ve done something today. And that’s always a good day. When I got here, I was like what am I doing, will I be rapping or what? Then they told me I was doing Bob Dylan’s part and I was like, you guys are real good comedians. But I approached it the best way I knew how. Did I do a better job than Bob Dylan? Hell, no. But after I did his part, it hit me that this was something way more important than I could ever imagine. Before I go, I just want to say I think it’s amazing what’s been done for Haiti but I also think it’s amazing what hasn’t been done for New Orleans. Thank you.”
With two UK No. 1s firmly under his belt (three if you count his Black Eye Peas production ‘I Gotta Feeling’), David Guetta returns for his hat-trick with the November 22nd release of his new single ‘One Love’ that features a very special guest in the shape of Estelle. ‘One Love’ combines the talents of artist/producer/remixer/DJ David Guetta with Estelle’s graceful and emotive vocal style, making for another immediately infectious pop / dance crossover hit that could match the success of recent chart-topping singles and two of the Continue reading →
It wasn’t the sharpest display of skills, but for a sold-out crowd of urban pop fans, it was a few hours of unadulterated fun. A horde of r & b singers, rappers and their hype men invaded the Comcast Center Sunday for the annual extravaganza known as Summer Jam, which technically takes place in the spring, but who cares? Every year, JAM’N 94.5 assembles the hottest radio artists and stuffs them into a six-hour marathon of waving towels, splashing water and backing tracks doing most of the work. The smell of weed smoke wafts through the air and many performers adhere to a reliable thug-by-numbers blueprint. This year’s all-male lineup was light on big-time star power, minus r & b ringleaders Akon and T-Pain, and the early portion proved to be a mixed bag. Newcomer Asher Roth served as ringleader of what appeared to be a tiresome frat party, but Kanye West protege Kid Cudi fared better with “Make Her Say” and the hypnotic “Day ’n’ Nite.” DJ Drama did what DJs do best – scream over popular records and sport a gargantuan chain, while Mims and a hype man worked hard for “Like This,” the circular logic of “This Is Why I’m Hot” and the bass-heavy “Move.” The venue didn’t truly heat up until Akon took the stage. True, the high-energy hitman was often too busy working the crowd to avoid lip syncing, but snippets of “We Takin’ Over,” “I’m So Paid” and “Right Now” turned the venue into a mosh pit nonetheless. Massive-bodied pop rapper Flo Rida kept the energy high on bounce-heavy hits “Low” and “Sugar,” but he may want to take some breath-control lessons from Bow Wow. Energetic and lyrically focused, the Summer Jam regular delivered on “I Think They Like Me,” “Fresh Azimiz” and “Outta My System,” tossing in a pair of Soulja Boy songs for the no-show Teen of Da South, who missed his flight.T-Pain’s closing set was all about big beats, enthralling dance routines and a cute piano interlude, but it was also an indication of what Summer Jam is really about: hits and hooks, high energy and optional vocal work. The dreadlocked Auto-Tune king often didn’t bother to sing while rolling out his massively popular contributions to urban music, including Kanye West’s “Good Life,” Lil Wayne’s “Got Money” and his own “Buy U a Drank.” And for the majority of the spellbound crowd, there were enough distractions onstage that it didn’t matter.
SPATE Magazine has come up with a list of next to blow in 2009. The list is made up of signed artists that have been able to create an interesting buzz around their music. One of the hardest things for an artist to do is build buzz. When you have 100′s of signed artists and millions of indie and unsigned artists in the world its difficult to bring the attention to your music. We feel that these artists managed to stand out and actually carve a unique place in the crowded hip hop market. They were able to create this buzz by partnering with some of the elite artists in hip hop like Akon, T-Pain, Snoop Dogg and many others. We are sure that this top 5 should make big noise in 2009.
