Elbow performed an intimate gig in the crypt of St Paul’s Cathedral last night

Elbow performed an intimate gig in the crypt of St Paul’s Cathedral last night (26.05.11).

The ‘Neat Little Rows’ band became the first rock group to play at the iconic London building, performing hits including ‘Grounds for Divorce’ and ‘One Day Like This’ as part of an hour-long set.

Lead singer and guitarist Guy Garvey told the crowd: “This is a bit unusual, isn’t it? Apart from being a lovely room, it’s steeped in history. Whatever you believe, you can’t help but feel something where people really believe. This is a big thing for us.”

The extraordinary venue ‘ which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren more than 300 years ago ‘ was packed as the quintet blasted out tracks from new album ‘Build a Rocket Boys!’ including ‘Jesus Is A Rochdale Girl’ and ‘Lippy Kids’ to an appreciative crowd, including Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood.

Guy announced he was honoured to play a gig in front of Admiral Nelson ‘ who is buried in the crypt alongside The Duke of Wellington, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Henry Moore ‘ and he regularly thanked the audience and admired the dome-like location’s acoustics.

Elbow’s set at St Paul’s Cathedral was recorded for Absolute Radio and will be broadcast on June 5 from 7pm in the UK, and it will be available to view on demand at www.absoluteradio.co.uk
