Calvin Harris – Feel so Close

Born: January 17, 1984 in Dumfries, Scotland. Favoring a naughty schoolboy look that makes him seem even younger than his already tender years (22 when his first major-label album was released), Scottish artist, producer, and remixer Calvin Harris has a similarly youthful and forward-looking approach to his music. Skipping the usual apprenticeship in the clubs or on indie labels, Harris went from posting his own D.I.Y. electroclash music online through MySpace and similar sites to signing with the multinational giant EMI almost in a single step. A couple steps later, he was producing material for Kylie Minogue, Dizzee Rascal, and Rihanna.

Born on January 17, 1984, in the southern Scotland city of Dumfries, Harris was first attracted to electronic music in his teens and was recording bedroom demos by 1999. Two of these songs, “Da Bongos” and “Brighter Days,” were released as a 12″ club single and CD-EP by the Prima Facie label in early 2002 under the artist name Stouffer. With that single to his credit, the still teenaged Harris moved from Scotland to London, but as a very small fish in one of the world’s largest and most competitive ponds, Harris floundered; only one of his songs was released during his time in London, “Let Me Know” with vocalist Ayah on the Unabombers’ 2004 live-mix CD Electric Soul, Vol. 2.

Returning home to Dumfries, Harris began posting homemade solo recordings to his MySpace page. An A&R representative from EMI liked what he heard and signed Harris to the label in 2006. Following a pair of successful singles, Harris released his debut album, I Created Disco, in the summer of 2007. It featured two Top Ten hits (“Acceptable in the 80s” and “The Girls”), and climbed high in the album charts. Along with his work as a solo artist, including touring in front of a full live band, Harris quickly became an in-demand remixer — working on singles by Jamiroquai, Groove Armada, All Saints, and CSS. He also wrote and produced songs for Kylie Minogue’s 2007 comeback album, and collaborated with Dizzee Rascal on “Dance wiv Me,” which reached number one in the U.K.

“I’m Not Alone,” the first single from his second album, also hit number one upon release in April 2009, as did the album when it appeared that August. That album, Ready for the Weekend, topped the U.K. album chart and peaked at number 12 on Billboard’s U.S. dance/electronic chart. Through 2011, Harris took on production work for Example, Tinchy Stryder, and Rihanna (“We Found Love,” a quadruple-platinum hit in the U.S.), while he also issued two more of his own singles (the Kelis collaboration “Bounce” and “Feel So Close”). Harris’ third solo album, Calvin Harris, was released in June 2012. Calvin Harris – Feel so Close now plying on Tablet TV

Blur to stream tracks on Twitter

Brit-pop icons Blur will air two new songs live and streaming online via Twitter.

NME reports that Blur will showcase two new songs ‘ ‘Under The Westway’ and ‘The Puritan’ ‘ which were written for their forthcoming Hyde Park show to close the London Olympics.

Blur have posted a video claiming the performance will be the first time a band have streamed a show on Twitter and that it’ll be the first time they’ve performed the songs (which isn’t entirely true; you can hear ‘Under The Westway’ here).

Bassist Alex James says the two tracks ‘show completely different sides of Blur’, claiming ‘The Puritan’ is a ‘big and bouncy, up and at ‘em sing-along special’ and ‘Under The Westway’ is ‘more a hymn’.

He said the 2009 shows ‘were the best we’ve ever done’ and again hints that this may be the final performance by the band, which Damon Albarn has been grappling with recently.

The band will perform the songs live on Monday 2 July ‘ ‘Under The Westway’ at 6:15pm and ‘The Puritan’ at 7:15 ‘ through @blurofficial.

Kelis creating sauce line

Kelis is set to release her own range of cooking sauces.

The Milkshake singer performed at this weekend’s Isle of Wight music festival in the UK after taking time out from singing. During her hiatus, Kelis qualified as a chef and is now planning to unveil a range of condiments to show off her skills.

“I love lifestyle stuff, I love housewares. I’m really a homebody, honestly,’ she explained. ‘Anything to do with my kitchen, or my house, I’m all about it. I’m working on a sauce line, so that’s kind of exciting. I’m a saucier.”

Kelis also revealed she is working on material for her new album. The star laughed that she isn’t sure how much work she still has to do on the record as she’s so indecisive.

‘It depends what day you ask me, some days I’m like, ‘It’s 80 per cent done,’ and other days when I say, ‘I’m 40 per cent done.’ I’m sort of midway I guess. It’s exciting though, it’s more electro, it’s a little deeper and darker,’ she told NME.

The 32-year old R&B star has previously spoken of how important it is for pop stars to learn other skills.

‘In my line of work, you can forget how good it is to learn again,’ she confessed.

Between 2006 and 2010 Kelis trained part-time as a chef, eventually graduating from the Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Hollywood.

Britney Spears ‘renting beach home’

Britney Spears is planning to rent a beachfront home in Malibu for the summer.

The singer was spotted looking around a property over the weekend. She was dressed casually as she took photos of the house with her fiancé Jason Trawick and her two sons Sean Preston and Jayden James.

“The house she checked out is for lease at just under $14,900 a month, and is also for sale for $7 million, but Brit’s people said she was only interested in a summer rental,” a source told RadarOnline.

Britney was also accompanied by her assistant and a team of bodyguards. The 30-year-old X Factor judge is believed to have spent around four hours looking at the house.

“They all seemed to really love it,” the source added.

The five-bedroom property is situated on the sand and boasts stunning ocean views and decking on each of its three levels. It also has a newly re-modelled kitchen, vaulted ceilings, 4.5 bathrooms, and the master suite situated at the top of the house has its own private sun deck. There is a studio apartment attached.

Britney Spears ‘seeks support from fiancé’

Britney Spears reportedly constantly looks at her fiancé for ‘reassurance’ while shooting The X Factor.

The singer is a new panellist on the American TV programme and it’s been claimed she is struggling to settle into the role. Although Britney enjoys being a part of the show, she is thought to be worried about her comments to contestants.

Her fiancé Jason Trawick ‘ one of the co-conservators who look after Britney’s personal and professional affairs ‘ is always nearby when the cameras are rolling, which comforts the star.

‘Jason is never more than striking distance away from her and Britney constantly looks at him for reassurance after everything she says,’ a source told UK magazine Heat. ‘But despite Jason doing everything they can to keep her on track, insiders say Britney is finding the experience nerve-wracking ordeal and keeps threatening to quit. She’s even been heard sounding upset in her dressing room.’

Britney has impressed audiences at the auditions and reportedly reacted well when someone she worked with on her first record tried out recently.

‘The crowd go crazy every time she walks in,’ the source said. ‘But she’s like a deer in the headlights.

Seasick Steve to headline Strummer of Love

Cult blues musician Seasick Steve is set to join the already outstanding line-up for this year’s Strummer of Love festival taking place in Somerset on the weekend of 17-19 August. The one-off event will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of iconic Clash frontman Joe Strummer.

Having sold out scores of venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Hammersmith Apollo and Brixton O2 Academy, Seasick Steve will be joining an already impressive line-up including the Pogues, Frank Turner and Emmy the Great.

Renowned for his growling vocals and use of customised instruments – including a battered three-string guitar, diddley bow, stomp box and various handmade contraptions – Steve is the natural choice and a perfect addition to the bill. His firewood instruments will be bringing some honest, foot-stomping, get-down and go-for-it attitude to the weekend’s festivities.

In addition, dance music pioneers Basement Jaxx will be performing an unseen and exclusive DJ set which promises to be one of the highlights of the festival. Classic dancehall and reggae DJ David Rodigan will make sure the whole site gets up and moving whilst DJ Scratchy, who rode on tour with the Clash, will be bringing an element of ’76 energy to the proceedings.

Faithful to the spirit of Strummer’s diverse life and career – as hippy era festivalgoer, folk troubadour, family man, globally feted punk icon and world music explorer – it will be an occasion to savour, leaving behind a plan of action after the partying is over.

Barbra Streisand returns to directing

For the first time in 16 years, Barbra Streisand is going back behind the camera to direct a new film.

Roger Friedman at Showbiz411 is saying that the film is Skinny and Cat, the story of the relationship between Erskine Caldwell and Margaret Bourke White. Linda Yellen has written the film and is producing with Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett in the lead.

Streisand’s previous film was 1996′s The Mirror Has Two Faces. Prior to that, she had directed The Prince of Tides (1991) and Yentl (1983). She currently has sold out shows set for New York, a new film (The Guilt Trip) and a possible duets album. Not bad for someone who just turned 70 in April.
